Dario Daddano’s path to fame and fortune had not always been an easy one. To rise to be the undisputed head of the Chicago Outfit required a great deal of tactical skill and smooth talk. And when that was not enough Dario was known and feared for letting his Thompson Annihilator do the talking – 900 rounds a minute. His temper was known to be as dark as his Calabrian complexion. However, very few people knew that prohibition had ignited an interest in Dario. An interest only his wife Marianna and a handful of his closest family members knew of: Dario had started home brewing. In the club with the boys he would be drinking Canadian moonshine, but he missed his beer terribly. Also, he was growing tired of the mobster life with its constant quarrels. So, when a Ukrainian friend from an associated gang told him about a style of beer that he used to drink back in his cold and miserable country, Dario was instantly curious. A beer designed to be rich and warming for those bone chilling Kharkiv winter nights. So, in the kitchen of Dario’s South Side Mansion, this unlikely duo happened to create what was probably the first Ukrainian Imperial Stout ever brewed in Chicago. A beer so rich, powerful and delicious that it simply could not be kept a secret for long. Quickly thereafter Dario retired as Don, only happy to pass on responsibilities. Instead he opened Daddano & Dadolnikov Brewing Company with his Ukrainian friend; thus effectively being one of the true pioneers of American craft brewing.

Bottle. Pours hazy very dark brown with airy tan head. Clear aroma of chocolate and malt, with estery and chocolatey notes and mild touches of coffee. Bitter, roasty flavour with notes of coffee and dark chocolate and sweetish, malty and estery hints. Roasty aftertaste, with notes of dark chocolate. Decent. Not sweet, which is nice to find in an Imperial Stout once n a while.

Bottle, 11%. Sweet bready liquorice aroma. Hint of vanilla. Black colour. Small brown head. The flavour is roasted with some vanilla. Fairly boozy with some bitter alcohol. Slightly sweet but not sweet enough to balance the alcohol.

Imperial stout intended to celebrate Amager's ten years of existence, again with a long nonsense story on the label I will not bother reading. Thanks again Erwin for sharing. Thick, dense, moussy, brownish-tinged beige head, dissipating in the middle, over a jet black beer with mahogany edges. Classic 'impy' aroma of black coffee, wet leather, bitter chocolate, butterscotch, raw cinnamon, beef stock cubes, dried black olives, toffee. Sweetish onset, dried fruits, raisin, sourish edge and a pleasantly balanced, beef stock-ish umami presence as well; soft carbonation, thick and oily mouthfeel, even a bit viscous. Caramelly, hazelnutty and butterscotch-like malt body, thick and generous, turning more and more toasted bitter towards the end and ending black coffeeish, adorned with some spicy hop notes and followed by an afterglow of warming, rum-like alcohol. Exemplary, textbook RIS, I'd say this is the perfect introduction to classic imperial stout without being over the top like so many other present-day examples of the style. Could drink this any day really...

22/X/17 - 50cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck @ Alengrin's Tasting (Goedele's place) - BB: IV/2024 (2017-1810) Thanks to Erwin for sharing the bottle!

Clear dark brown to black beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, bit adhesive. Aroma: sweet, caramel, very malty, lots of chocolate, coffee and mocha touch. MF: soft carbon, full body. Taste: sweet start, pretty bitter roast, some chocolate, malty, caramel notes, quite some alcohol noticeable, slightly acidic touch. Aftertaste: bitter touch, nice roast, very balanced, malty, sweet, dark chocolate, little hoppy. Good stuff! Amager still makes some of the best stouts!
