The tradition of a stronger Altbier brewed once or twice a year survives to this day in Düsseldorf. Our version pays homage to those great beers: spicy hops and light toffee on the nose, along with a savoury note from the addition of beechwood smoked malt. More smoke on the palate, caramel, spice, bready malt, perfectly balanced by a firm, clean bitterness.

Rauch Alt in the UK..I’ll bite. Bigtime bamberg smoke tones. I love it, but still has some fishy fining character maybe. Fully smoked, sweet malt tones. Satisfies all my rauch cravings with some Ale sensibilities. Great.

Small, if reasonably stable yellow head over foxy amber beer with a slight veil. Smoked meat, bacon, phenols, tarred poles, partly burnt wood. OK, but unidimensional. Smoked, phenolic, woody, light acidic hint. Some hops too, it would seem, hint at banana. Bitter finish. Medium bodied, slick, bit oily and burning MF. Not the best of smoked beers, rather harsh. Thanks, Jezza!

Bottle from Ales by Mail, drunk on the hottest day of the year. Tan/light brown, with a small clump of off-white head. Murky and very carbonated. Smoke, caramel, forest floor and a touch of Marmite in the aroma. Sweetish taste with a yeasty/meaty savoury edge. A marked bitter note in the finish, just half a step away from being too harsh. The carbonation serves the beer well in the palate. Earthy hop with residual smoke in the aftertaste. Well done.

On tap @Mad for Beer (Rome). Pours clear amber with a medium white head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, light smoke, delicate. Flavour is very well balanced and delicate, medium malt profile with a correct sweetness and a good bitter end with a smokey touch. Medium body, medium carbonation, easy and drinkable. Another good beer from this brewery.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Cotteridge, Birmingham, consumed at home Saturday 21st November 2015 Pours murky brown with a slim off white head, weirdly I get a bit of mint amongst the smokiness. Loz gets a fresh, organic note. I have to say I am not totally struck on this beer, its ok but no great shakes, just keep getting a mintiness, it’s a little bit cold (my fault), I really wanted to like this but it’s just ok. Bottle from BottleDog, Edinburgh. Hazy chestnut body with a dense off-white head. Good lacing. Aroma of autumn leaves, smoked malts and cheese. Flavour of tea, toffee, plum and a touch of soy sauce. Medium body with a creamy texture. Soft fizz. Paired well with my bbq beef Hula-Hoops.
