Well, in the past I hated their Espresso Stout but the Hammer was really good, so I have no idea what to expect. Very dark brown, thin brown head...looks good. Body is medium, some malt sweetness but maybe not enough to cover the coffee, which is clean but quite frankly boring. Can’t use boring coffee in a coffee stout - it’s the showpiece ingredient so it needs to be brighter and more complex. So overall, it’s ok, but not great by any means.

Bottle from BC Liquors
Black color with generous brownish head. Aroma of coffee pot and coffee beans. Dry and lean mouthfeel; strong character of bad, day-old coffee pot; regular bitterness.
Not the beer we need.

650 ml bottle. Pours black with small tan head. Aromas of cocoa powder, burnt sugar, and burnt coffee. Flavors of coffee, heavily roasted malt, cola, and a bit of vanilla. A little oily and a bit too much carbonation. Still quite easy to drink and no notice of the ABV. True, a great value for less than Cdn $6.

650mL bottle, pours black with a small brown head. Nose of loads as loads of espresso, burnt roasted malt, and some cocoa beans. Flavour brings out pronounced dark roasted espresso beans above anything. There really isn't much more to this other than the coffee. Dense coffee dominates, with a medium body. One of Phillips' better beers for sure.
