Anchor Winter Wheat is made with a unique blend of 2-row pale barley malt, Belgian roasted wheat malt, German pale spring wheat malt, "Midnight" and hard red wheat malts from the Midwest, and unmalted soft red winter wheat from a local family farm. The result is a smooth, complex, dark brew with a creamy, lacey head; deep, rich mouthfeel; nutty, bread-like, and subtly roasted flavors; and a crisp, clean finish. A special ale yeast provides clean flavors with hints of dark fruit. And a single hop, Northern Brewer, provides earthy, woody, and minty notes with just the right amount of bitterness.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dror’s place. Thanks zvikar. Dark brown,. Aroma of malt ,caramel, oxidation and toast. Sweet flavor, caramelly, with toast, nuts, a fruity note, and light oxidation. Medium-bodied. Where’s the wheat beer?!

12 oz bottle from a case bought at work. 10/13/14 production date if I’m reading the weird code right. Aroma is bready, clove, chalky candy, wet river rock, chocolate. Pours nearly opaque black but has red tints in the light--super dark for style; one finger beige head with excellent retention. Tastes a lot like Anchor Porter, which is to say, it’s mighty fine. It has a faint clove character that distinguishes it from that beer. It’s biscuity and sweet with a light bitter and spicy finish. Creamy mouthfeel, tight carbonation. Good, but barely resembles a dunkelweizen. Edit, after thinking about it for a few days: this is one of those beers that seems fairly impressive when you’re first drinking it, then you realize afterwards that you don’t really want to drink any more of it anytime soon. And I got a case of this stuff. Definitely would be more into it right around the end of fall/beginning of winter; springtime and sunshine don’t go well with this one.

Bottle. Nose is licorice, banana, raisin, dates, slight cloves and spice, touch of dough. Very appealing. Taste is roast, malts, toast, leading to banana and chocolate, very slight spice and pepper and a flat cream note in the lightly bitter chocolate finish. Mouthfeel is full. I really enjoyed this much more than I thought I would.

Darker and than most dunkelweizens, with more of a black rather than a leathery brown appearance. Sizeable head. Also a heavy roast, for the style, with the roasted flavor nearly overwhelming the other flavors of a wheat beer; the sweetness; banana and clove. Still, you know what you are drinking by the flavor, even if the roast and abv are high.
