Head reduced to rim in seconds; clear copper beer, almost still. Bit sweetish nose, seems slightly oxidized, even when within BBD. Nutty, caramel. Seriously oxidized, with a bitter finish. Walnuts, walnutpeel, giving a crude bitterness that keeps lingering. Sharpish, wry to almost astringent. Walnut bitterness just goes on in the aftertaste. Undercarbonated. Ouch. Thanks to Stef!

'Pale lager' by Struise in collaboration with a bunch of Iberian craft breweries - I've been curious about this since I first read about it. From a 75 cl bottle with crown cap, shared with my girlfriend. Slow gusher, but nothing dramatic. Egg-white, loudly crackling, foamy and thick but uneven-bubbled and gradually dissipating head; misty deep orangey-tinged peach blonde robe. Aroma initially dominated by sharp carbon dioxide, which quickly gives way to hints of bread crust, freshly baked malt, green tea, unripe peach, rusk, bitter honey, infusion of dandelion and other garden herbs, cut flowers, lightly toasted pine nuts, rosemary, bergamot, sweetclover, fried tomato peel, old orange peel, some 'rusty' oxidation and a vague hint of burnt rubber. Crisp onset, lots of stinging, very minerally carbonation at first, next to fruity notes of unripe peach, apple and apricot, but restrainedly so, and only vaguely sweetish; most of the sweetness comes from the malts, though, with a rusk- and sweet cracker-like character, enhanced by yeast breadiness in the end. Notably herbal in the finish, very tea-like (camomile tea, Earl Grey, vague potpourri touch even); long, pleasantly earthy hop bitterness in the tail, but also a retronasal indication of 'rusty' oxidation - weirdly so, because the 'best before' date is in February next year. Quite unusual, weirdly oxidized and very herbal: how on earth is this a pale lager? Feels more like some idiosyncratic, spiced Fantôme saison... This may be bottom-fermented as the brewery claims, but in no universe is this an American pale lager - I guess this moniker has been used ironically. Betraying its low ABV with a well-filled personality, quenching and confidently hopped, this is an interesting one to say the least, but clearly Struise's forte still lies in big bold stouts and quad variations, and not so much in lagers... Weird, but glad I tasted it, and certainly enjoyable enough.

75cl bottle (BBF: 06 FEB 2021) from Etre Gourmet web shop. F: thin, egg-white, quick gone. C: deep gold to amber, bit hazy. A: sweet malty, mellow fruity, peach, floral, bit citrus. T: medium malty base, bit bready, mellow fruity, caramel, decent bitterness, bit toast, not very hoppy yet not bad for me, soft carbonation, nice, enjoyed.

75cl bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, Feb '19, brought by me. Pours misty golden amber, frothy white topping. Herbal nose. An oxymoronic bottom-fermented collaboration ale (??). To be drunk fresh, but aged for 6 months in tank. Almost no hop presence. Herbal, dirty taste. Just nothing going for this. How can an 8-brewery collab go so wrong?
