Opaque dark brown beer. Not much of a head. Silky palate, quite light for it’s abv. Mild carbonation. Smooth dark malt. Big splash of bourbon. Whisper of vanilla. Mild minerals. Very mild chocolate and bitter coffee. Some lactose sweetness. Overall a pretty smooth RIS beast.

Bomber courtesy of ksurkin. Pours a deep clear mahogany with dark tan head. The aroma is chocolate malt balls, earthiness and apples as well as some bourbon and wood. The taste is smooth yummy chocolate and toffee and malt balls rolling into richer chocolate goodness, smooth bourbon, mild wood notes and growing booziness into the finish. Nice stuff. Wow. The flavor notes really work well together creating a toffee, chocolate, malted milk shake like latte experience until the heat shows up and thus breaking up the level of yumminess that was attained.

22oz bottle looks great on the pour, 99% opaque deep brown with a creamy, thick, lacing beige head. Nose smelled a little infected to me, prunes, lacto, cherries, light vanilla, some berry, burnt toast, stale coffee. Flavor is sweet, light smoke, burnt toast, malty, caramel, maraschino cherry, coffee liqueur, malt extract. It’s a touch cloying in the mouth. The barrel is nice, well balanced in terms of having enough barrel flavor, but it could have benefits from less alcohol and less sugar. Fairly smooth all the way through though, and easily drinkable. I have mixed emotions, I like it for the smart way it was barrel aged but the base beer is not quite there.

Bottle thanks to someone who I cannot quite remember. Poured dark brown with a brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a relatively strong bourbon note with roasted malt and a bit of chocolate. Flavor began with sweet grains and chocolate with growing roasted malt note and a bourbon backing throughout.

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown - almost black color with a dark tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is dark fruits, coffee, chocolate, and alcohol. Flavor is similar, with a deep, strong malty body to it. Fruits and Chocolate come up second. A wonderful beer from this brewery.

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 01/26/2009. Clear dark brown body with a small off-white head. Bourbon aroma with some chocolate and alcohol. Big bourbon flavor with some chocolate hints. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Overall a bit thin and dominated by bourbon. 7/4/7/3/14 - 3.5 On tap at Capital Ale House - Midlothian on 04/27/2008. Dark brown body with ruby highlights and a creamy light tan head. Bourbon aroma with light caramel and molassas. Huge bourbon flavor with more molassas and a sturdy hop bite. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Quite likely the best beer that I’ve had from Blue & Gray so far. 8/4/7/3/15 - 3.7
