Did you know that hedgehog numbers are in decline, with a third of urban and a half of rural populations disappearing since 2000? Old Prickly has been brewed since 2012 to support the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS). Founded in 1982 and based in Shropshire, the charity aims to give advice, educate and fund research on our prickly friends.

There are lots of simple things you can do to help hedgehogs, one being to make sure they have access into your garden by providing a 13cm x 13cm gap at the bottom of, or under fences and walls. Hedgehogs will travel a mile in a night so need lots of joined up gardens

Hobsons Brewery donated to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society £50 for every Old Prickly brew from 2012 to 2019; we have donated in excess of £46,000!

The snuffly hedge grog is a pale ale full of hop flavour and brewed with Columbus and Lubelski hops to give this beer a complex flavour of floral and citrus notes. Locally sourced Maris Otter malting barley is used to brew this beer which has become a firm favourite and permanent beer.

Bottle Notes - Old Prickly is a bottle conditioned beer which contains sediment, pour carefully and best stored upright at cellar temperature 10 - 12 degrees.

Bottle in a trade with BlackHaddock, thanks Jeremy. Pale gold slight haze lasting thin white head. Touch of citrus hops on the aroma. Decent ale flavour in the mouth, ok swallow and light citrus hop sting on finish. Acceptable flavours are light and ok. Perfectly fine.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a slightly hazy medium amber with a thin white head. The aroma is weak, but with some citrus notes. The flavour is of mild grapefruit and apple with a touch of sourness on the palate. It’s weak bitter with some hints of malt in there too. It isn’t a classic, but it is a very decent and well drinkable ale.

Bottle from Appleyards Deli, Shrewsbury, Shropshire Saturday 25th August 2012 consumed at home Sunday 2nd September 2012 Straw coloured beer with white head, decent clarity, looks fine. Soft in mouth a little spiciness, perhaps ginger, touch of wheatiness, a little bit of a bite. Comes across as a Wheat Beer/Golden Ale cross. Fine, however, Hobsons can and do bettet beers than this. Two lunchtime pints: hand pulled in The Wrekin Inn, Wellington on Saturday 12th May 2012. Golden, bright and clear body, snow white head of bubbles on top. Dry tasting and refreshing: citrusy nose and finish. Wasn’t overly impressed to be honest.
