Pale ale brewed with squid ink

This beer is daft. We’ve added squid ink because we can. It’s a light refreshing beer with a hint of The Deep Darknes of the Ocean.

It’s light and refreshing with a crisp herbal aroma, fresh sea ozone, with hints of summer rock pools, seaweed and, if you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of the waves crashing and even a faint backgrond of children building sand castles, sea gulls, fog horns et cetera.

Bottle at Hardknott on Track, Millom. Ok. This is a pale beer (the same recipe, more or less, as Lux Borealis) with squid ink in it so it looks pale yellow until you pour the squid ink in - and this point I must stress intensely - at which point it looks like cloudy, browny green dishwater. Aroma of lime Pixy Stix. The taste is sweet/sour and fruity, but there’s another element (coming from the squid ink?) which adds a meaty saltiness. Odd, and not necessarily recommended. But I was really happy to try it, and it’s kind of cool that Brewers are doing this kind of thing.

Takes a bit of effort to get the ink out of the bottle, when you do you have a remarkable looking beer, it’s gold or black depending on which angle the light catches it, somewhat like those flash car paint jobs. Pale cream colour head. A very pretty beer indeed! Thin malts. Good but light citric hops, slightly tangy orange and grapefruit flesh in the mid. Little peach on the back end. Not sure I can taste what the ink brings but it does look striking! Very drinkable.
