Cask halfpint at The Junction, Castleford. Pitch black colour, tan head. Pleasant aroma of roast malts, red wine, liquorice and chocolate. Rich flavour, roast malts, red wine, liquorice, some alcohol, oak. Warming mouthfeel. Excellent beer.

Tap at Goat and Munch, Chester Nose is a heady mix of brandy / cognac booziness interlaced with vanilla. Pours a very dark brown with a small cream head. In the mouth the vanilla leaps out to start before a general sweetness of cake, toffee and fudge comes through. The finish is mainly coffee and liquorice. You can tell that it’s strong, but that doesn’t overwhelm the taste. Nice – though I wouldn’t like to drink too many at once !

Black jack sweets. Palate - medium to full bodied with a big crunchy texture. The finish is dry and crunchy. Overall - very nice.

Keg at The Sparrow, Bradford. It pours opaque jet black with a decent tan head. The aroma is sweet, intoxicating, sticky, vanilla, chocolate brownie, creamy coffee, caramel and Mars bar. The taste is dry, bitter, ashy, charred, burnt toast, umami, liquorice, cacao nibs, touch of vanilla, coffee grounds, some boozy warmth and leather with a peppery roast finish. Fulsome body and fine carbonation. Oily as it warms. Rich and robust. Fun stuff.

Cask @ Head Of Steam, Leeds. Black with a small off-white head. It's very stated with its roasted malts, and these hide its strength. Surprisingly crisp, it has plenty of nose.

Keg at CBC Old Street, 23/11/17. Black with a handsome tan head. Nose is rich roast, bitter dark chocolate, light spice, molasses. Taste comprises chocolate cake, vanilla essence, light smoke, charr, roasted malts, toffee fudge. Medium plus body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light boost. Really good well joined up impy stout ... drinks below the abv and slips down easily.
