Aztec Imperial Stout

We started with our Barrel Aged Str8 Flexin’, then took select barrels and conditioned them on our Aztec inspired spice blend of Ancho Chili, Cinnamon, Cocoa, and Vanilla. The ancho provides a delicate dark fruit and raisin character along with a warmth that beautifully accents the aromatics of the cinnamon. The cocoa adds a decadent dark chocolate bitterness while the vanilla’s sweetness brings everything into balance. Expect lots of warming spices in the while the palate is dominated by bitter cocoa, vanilla sweetness, dried fruit, and a subtle barrel character.

12oz @ Alex's. Appearance: dark brown with a weak brown head. Aroma: spices, some sweetness and well hidden bourbon. Taste: along the same lines, finishes with some roasted malts and chocolate. Overall: good for the spicy beers fans, ok for me.

Feb 08, 2025: Poured from 355mL can (silver top, unsure if this is 2021 or 2022 due to Twin Sails' useless labelling, but some have suggested 2022 has a black top can so rating this under 2021). Near black with small tan head. Lots of ancho and cinnamon spice, mild cocoa, feint booze, comes off a bit thin. Okay, but definitely fallen off a bit with age. (RB scale: 8/4/8/3/15)

Apr 20, 2022 (Brewver 8/7/8/8/8; not sure how RB transferred, but guessing 8/4/8/4/16): Poured from 355mL can (finally getting around to trying this from December). Black with small tan head. Aroma of cinnamon, cocoa, touch of chillis. Taste of bourbon barrel, cocoa, chocolate, ancho chilli. Most of the flavour is upfront, the finish is more medium body with mild dark fruity malt. Overall decent, but a little too much spice.

2023-04-25, can from the brewery, 8-4-8-4-16=40
Dark brown colour, the head disappears quickly. Intense aroma: chocolate, tobacco, leather, warm spices. It's moderately sweet, and the body is lean; very good chocolate flavour, with abundant spices, and evident booze.
Very good.

Black colour. Strong aroma of spices, hints of anise. Oily mouthfeel, it's sweet, flavour of chocolate, strong spices, strong barrel; the alcohol is quite hot.
Interesting but over the top.

355 ml can. Pours a deep dark brown. Aromas of cinnamon, roasted peppers, vanilla and rich roasted malts. Flavors follow same with additional chocolate and emphasis spice. Rich. Very good

330mL can, pours black with a tiny head. Aroma reveals the chilis and cinnamon upfront, with cocoa and vanilla further back, and the barrels even further back. Flavour is rich, with lots of bourbon at the base, with vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon and just a touch of chilis. I'm usually not a fan of chili spiced impies, but this is done tastefully. Excellent.

Dark brown. Just a thin head. The aroma bursts with cinnamon and ancho, light chocolate, sweet malts. On the palate, similar. Big cinnamon, light fruitiness, a rounded ancho note, lots of sticky sweet dark sugars. The vanilla pulls everything together in the final third, and then some soft barrel notes, and alcohol that comes in fairly lightly for such a strong beer. That alcohol does bring a touch of dryness, however. Puro chingn!

This was a fabulous beer, basically Mexican hot chocolate made better by embedding it within with a delicious BA Imp stout. Clear flavours of dark chocolate dominate with gentle cinnamon and dried fruits. Bourbon supports it all without taking over. A clear winner.
