Past Masters 1914 Strong X has been brewed by Fuller’s master brewers to a recipe that dates back to 4th August 1914, the day war was declared, which was found in Fuller’s brew book. Every recipe of every beer ever brewed at the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick has been recorded in meticulous details in this bible of brewing. This brew, back in 1914, was just called X.
X Ale was colloquially known as "Four Ale" in London because it cost 4d a pint. It was a mild ale, however, 2014 Past Masters has been made slightly stronger at 7.3% ABV. The same raw materials have been used: pale ale malt, Brewer’s invert syrup No3 and dark syrup to give the sugars for fermentation. The hops include Goldings and Fuggles from England, although they may have been sourced from Belgium in the original brew in 1914.

Bottle from Systembolaget from a while back. Pours a slightly hazy redish-brown with creamy beige head. Not very complex but the aroma and taste of chestnut, dark caramel and dark fruit is beautiful. I need more of this.

Fra flaske, første dag på DØE Ølfestival i Lokomotivværkstedet maj-17: klar kobbergylden med ok skum. Frugtig aroma og smag med svesker, figen, appelsin mandarin, sirup og sommerblomster. Kompleks, blød og velsmagende med en saftig og delikat afslutning.

Bottle @ DØE. Clear amber with small off-white head. Aroma is malt, caramel, oak, wood, biscuit and toasted. Flavour is malt, caramel, toasted, biscuit, oak, wood, sweet, grass, hop and medium bitter.

Clear deep copper color, medium-sized off-white head. Interesting cane sugar aroma - almost like rhum.Medium-bodied. Sweet, cane sugar, honey, English fruity hops, lowish carbonation. Wineous. Kind of strange Fullers. It has typical Fullers house flavour but that invert sugar makes this really weird.

Bottle at a tasting. Mostly malt-centered, lots of sweetish malty complexity, caramelly, biscuity, toasted. Dried fruits, raisins. Alcohol is under control. Bitterness slightly lacking, with body seemingly moderate, definitely not too heavy. Drinkable after all. Good IMO

Bottle kindly shared by Gurthnar, many thanks. Amber color with medium off-white head. Caramel malt, red fruits in aroma., honey. Taste, sweet caramel malt, candies, red fruits. Not bad, too much on sweet side.

Bottled. An amber beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of malt and caramel, as well as light notes of alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and alcohol.

Bottle 500 ml. Clear golden-bronze-colored ale with white foam. Aroma: fruity, apricots, white raisins, honey, a little cheese (yeast), floral, a little white port. Taste quite good: ful bodied, malty, light sweetness of nectar, dried apricots, raisins, candies, porto, mild hop bitterness. Very good balance. Good one.

500ml bottle into pint. Exquisite golden bronze beer with two finger white head. Steady carbonation, looks great. Nose is mostly malt, touch of earthy grass perhaps. Full-bodied and zingy. Fruit loaf comes to mind. Grain, alcohol and raisins in the finish. So.....LONDON 1914, war on the horizon, rudimentary medicine, outside toilets, horrible pollution but GREAT BEER!

Nice decent evening sipper. A bit to sweet to be a favorite.
Nice golden color with a fine head. Ok intensity in the aroma. Medium + body and a smooth carbonation. A bit sweet and a moderate bitterness. Toffee, malty, fruity and a bit bready flavor.
