Past Masters 1914 Strong X has been brewed by Fuller’s master brewers to a recipe that dates back to 4th August 1914, the day war was declared, which was found in Fuller’s brew book. Every recipe of every beer ever brewed at the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick has been recorded in meticulous details in this bible of brewing. This brew, back in 1914, was just called X.

X Ale was colloquially known as "Four Ale" in London because it cost 4d a pint. It was a mild ale, however, 2014 Past Masters has been made slightly stronger at 7.3% ABV. The same raw materials have been used: pale ale malt, Brewer’s invert syrup No3 and dark syrup to give the sugars for fermentation. The hops include Goldings and Fuggles from England, although they may have been sourced from Belgium in the original brew in 1914.

Pours a nice amber color with medium short lasting white head. Smell is subtle, bready and slightly fruity. Medium body with oily, creamy texture to it. Medium carbonation. Taste is pleasant and subtle, just like the smell. Combination of sweet and bitter - bread, caramel, fruits, some herbs... Bitter and dry finish. Interestingly enough, ABV of 7.3% is not really noticeable at first. This one goes down quite smoothly and is very drinkable. However, noticeable or not - ABV is real deal, so high drinkability can be deceiving if you’re not careful enough. Overall, this was pretty good. In a way - it’s nothing special, but at the same time it also doesn’t have any real flaws. So, a good, solid beer well worth a try. Recommended.

Bottle from the brewery shop. Malty fresh and sweetish nose. The beer starts fresh and fruity. Sweetish hints with a fruity and ale-typical body. Not too deep, round but a bit sweetish. Mild bitterness in the end.

Bottle shared at Chris and Ruth’s pre-GBBF tasting 2015 - London. Pours totally clear gold with a creamy, white head. The nose holds English yeast, bread, and light ripening citrus fruits. Medium sweet flavor with some ripe peach, bread, more yeast, orange. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish, with some sticky sugar, citrus and bread. Classical in style. Very tasty.

Bottled 500ml. -from Pivoljub Ljubljana. Golden/amber coloured, medium sized off-white head, dried fruits in the nose. Sweet malty, caramel, dried fruits touch of metal and alcohol with jam like fruity finish. Almost sticky and too sweet overall. Rather average.

Courtesy of and shared with ogivlado (thanks!), darker orange-amber, clean body, small slightly off white head. Sweet, full malty aroma, notes of strawberry jam. Quite nice, in spite of some glue coming up. Taste... a disappointment... mild malty notes, ending dry, vaguely herbal, strange notes. Damn boring. The ABV is very, very well hidden, but the beer just isn’t appealing. Strange bittersweet note in the aftertaste. No, wait, some alcohol pops up later on. Underwhelming.

Bottle at Chris & Ruth’s pre-GBBF shindig, 2015. Gold pour, no head. Aromas of pear drops, red apple and rhubarb which segues nicely into the flavour. Nice.

Bottle at ChrisO’s Pre - GBBF tasting. It pours clear deep golden amber with a thick white head. The nose is sweet, oily, juicy, plenty of stewed fruits, apricot, peach, raisin and vinous character. The nose is rich, bitter - sweet, fruit cake, raisin, sultana, light spice, brown bread, candied peel and light alcohol warmth towards the finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Well - rounded and rather enjoyable.

Pre GBBF tasting at Chris and Ruth’s. Almost clear gold beer, small white head. Smooth light palate, modest fine carbonation. Smooth semi sweet pale malts. Mildly spicy dried fruits, quite bright. Trace of peach. Pretty drinkable.
