Past Masters 1914 Strong X has been brewed by Fuller’s master brewers to a recipe that dates back to 4th August 1914, the day war was declared, which was found in Fuller’s brew book. Every recipe of every beer ever brewed at the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick has been recorded in meticulous details in this bible of brewing. This brew, back in 1914, was just called X.
X Ale was colloquially known as "Four Ale" in London because it cost 4d a pint. It was a mild ale, however, 2014 Past Masters has been made slightly stronger at 7.3% ABV. The same raw materials have been used: pale ale malt, Brewer’s invert syrup No3 and dark syrup to give the sugars for fermentation. The hops include Goldings and Fuggles from England, although they may have been sourced from Belgium in the original brew in 1914.

Bottle at Chris & Ruth’s pre GBBF shindig; clear amber pour with a thin off white head, aroma has fruit and toffee, taste has caramel, with some bready malts, some dried fruits, ok.

Bottle 500ml. [ As Fullers Past Masters 1914 Strong X ].Clear medium yellow amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, caramel, light moderate hoppy, grass. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration, sweet malt, grass - hay, caramel. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet and light bitter with a long duration, sweet malt, sugary, caramel, dried fruit, straw. 50cl bottle, pre Tuska tasting, thanks sperkeleforce! Amber colored, thin white head. Sweet fruity, malty aroma. Flavor has malt, dark fruits, sweetness. Drinks well but drowns in the masses.

Bottle @ fonefan tasting. Clear golden with a white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and light hoppy. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet and moderate bitter finish. 200615

50 cl bottle @ Sankt Hans Tasting, Ulfborg. BBE 2017.
Aroma has nuts, sweet malty tones and grain. Feels lager-like. Flavour has butter, sweet malty tones, toffee and some ripe fruits. Alcohol is present but does not disturb. Grainy and malty one, not what I expected. Too much hoppiness for a mild ale.

Bottled@fonefan. Golden colour, small off-white head. Aroma is fruity, floral, mild nectar and some spiced notes. Flavour is fruity, floral, some alcohol and also some sweet malts. Tasty. Quite far from a mild ale, more like an English Strong Ale.

Flaska från SB, något år gammal. Kopparfärgad, klar med lågt skum. Brödig och maltig doft med en lite fruktig och karamellig ton. Maltsöt med fruktig och bäriga toner typ aprikos, hjortron och lite fugglesblommighet. Stilmässigt någonstans mellan brittisk och ljus belgisk strong ale. Lite söt kanske men annars trevlig.

Bottle at KØ15. Bready aroma. Clear dark shiny golden colour. Big stable off-white head. The flavour is quite malty, almost sweet. Not bad, though.
