Past Masters 1914 Strong X has been brewed by Fuller’s master brewers to a recipe that dates back to 4th August 1914, the day war was declared, which was found in Fuller’s brew book. Every recipe of every beer ever brewed at the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick has been recorded in meticulous details in this bible of brewing. This brew, back in 1914, was just called X.
X Ale was colloquially known as "Four Ale" in London because it cost 4d a pint. It was a mild ale, however, 2014 Past Masters has been made slightly stronger at 7.3% ABV. The same raw materials have been used: pale ale malt, Brewer’s invert syrup No3 and dark syrup to give the sugars for fermentation. The hops include Goldings and Fuggles from England, although they may have been sourced from Belgium in the original brew in 1914.

50 cl bottle. Pours clear and golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma is mild fruity, light phenolic and toasted malty. Smooth, toasted and slight caramelish malty finish.

Copper colored, medium strong white head, not very lasting. Aroma is sweet caramel, toffee, biscuit, bready, fruits and bit grass. Taste is moderate sweet caramel malt, toffee, sugary syrup, fruits, biscuit, nice sweet bready finish and aftertaste. Some floral, grassy hops, low bitterness. Some alcohol present in the nose as well as in the taste. Medium+ bodied, low to medium carbonation, bit syrupy and sticky.

(Bottle, 0.5 l - BBE 2017, from Alko Arkadia, 20150501) The beer poured deep golden and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, honey, toffee, earth and grass. Palate was medium bodied and almost sticky with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, sweetness, toffee, earth, grass, toffee and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty, sweet and bitter. A tasty but also too sweet brew. Stronger hop bite might have helped with the excessive sweetness but of cours you couldn’t categorise the beer as mild anymore.

Bottle, 10C. Amber with a loose white head that fades to a coat. Aroma of toffee, pears, golden raisins. full bodied, but not anywhere near sticky. Lots of fruit (golden raisins, jammy apricot) and toffee, some floral notes, dries out a fair bit with bitterness that’s just on the low end of moderate. Alcohol is very well hidden. First half I was liking its straightforwardness and that it didn’t seem too rich, but after a while the sweetness began to wear. Interesting look into the past.

Pours amber with a fading head.Nose shows grassy hops, cereal, sweet honey and golden syrup notes.Sweet flavours, more grassy notes, some metallic hints, honey, a bit of hay and cardboard.

Bottle from London Drinker Festival 2015. Clear amber lasting thin off white head. Malty syrup and British peppery hop aroma. Sweetish and strongish in the mouth but pretty well balanced. I liked the sweetness of the malt, some orange flavours, then this good mixed peppery hop finish. Mostly white pepper. Utterly drinkable and hides the abv well. I liked it very much.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Clear amber, small head. Caramelly nose with some honey. Sweet with full body and soft mouthfeel. Syrup, caramel, honey and cereals. Low bitterness. Very sweet yet harmonious.
