This is our porter, The Favourite, enhanced with a subtle addition of star anise. This addition gives the rich and fruity porter an extra complexity with a gentle hint of liquorice.

Gravity cask at Cambridge Winter Ales Festival, 2015. Liquorice, cherry, chocolate aroma. Taste is lovely. A bitter hoppy porter shot through with star anise. Spice, sweetness and bitterness blend in a lovely smooth finish. Grassy hop in the bitter aftertaste. Remarkable.

Cask at Royal Navy Volunteer. It pours deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is earthy, big liquorice, coffee, toast and star anise. The taste is earthy, some bitterness, toast, massive liquorice component, dirt, coffee, warming alcohol, spice and mild acidity with a dry finish. Medium and fine carbonation. Too much liquorice fire my taste.

Gravity dispense at the Gun winter fest, 31/01/14. Extremely dark mahogony brown with a moderate beige head that dissipates to spotting. Nose is big on liqourice, light roast, aniseed, dark toffee. Taste comprises star anise, light roast, toffee, earthy, spice, liqourice. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough porter on gravity.

Cask at the gin winter ale festival. Aroma is big liquorice sweet with some wood. Clouded dark brown red with a fleeting loose cream head. Flavour is initially sweet nutty caramel malt with trreacle . then big liquorice and a big drying tartness. Some tanin in the finish and alcohol is present. Not a fan of liquorice.
