This German-style Altbier is our nod to an old world, old school ale. The word “Alt” is German for "old", and refers to the traditional style of brewing before lager yeast was discovered. Balt is a dark, copper colored brew with a creamy head, a gentle bitterness and a clean, dry finish. Prost, Hon!

12 ounce can. Deep reddish brown color topped by a firm rocky beige head that yields a nice clinging lace. Aroma is nutty toasted malt with a touch of Dutch cocoa powder. Flavor mirrors the aroma. More nutty maltiness with a hint of cocoa and spicy herbal hops. Nice balance and flavor throughout. Dry spicy hop finish. Lacks the malt complexity of a traditional German Alt, but tasty nonetheless.

Can. Pours amber with medium sized foamy beige head that dissipates quickly, light caramelized malt aroma, medium carbonation, caramel taste with slight bitterness at the end, abrupt finish with sticky caramel aftertaste. Nice and easy to drink.

Kind of weak on the normal alt characters. Taste was more sweet than nutty, body a bit thin. Cola colored, underwhelming

Not hugely reminiscent of other altbiers I’ve had, but ok for a easy-to-drink session beer with a little taste of interesting barley. Pours brown with ok head and lacing. Finishes with light bitterness. Palate a little watery. Can.

Rich deep amber coloured body with a light brown, copper and even ruby-tinted bronze glow, all with a single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, cardboard, rice, nuts, earth and a bit of grain. Medium-bodied; Assertive rice and grain flavours with a bit of a bitterness from the malt and toffee, a hint of caramelised sugars and a touch of herbal notes at the end. Aftertaste shows mostly malt and grain notes with only earth coming through. Overall, a fairly one-dimensional beer that shows some decent qualities, but doesn’t have enough complexity or depth to be considered great. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Whole Foods in Foggy Bottom (I Street) in Washington, DC on 25-October-2013 for US$2.49 sampled at home in Washington on 22-February-2014.

Draft at Glen’s Garden Market. Poured a pretty clear, dark tan/light brown color with a nice small white head. Aroma was some nice dried fruit notes, caramel and toffee are in this throughout. Dark, creamy notes. Flavor was nice fruit notes, caramel notes. Some earthy notes from the hops, toffee. This is pretty darn enjoyable.

GBBF Day 4. Lightly hazy brown beer. Good pale tan head. Light dry palate. Little fine carbonation. Floral malt. Good toffee with a little dried fruits. Floral orange. Quite a dry finish. Not bad and the last beer of a great GBBF 2013.
