Sweat beaded on her brow as she saw the bulbous end-boss walk into the game room. She knew he was there for one thing only – to take away her high score. She had battled for weeks to get her name in shining lights on that machine, and there was no way she was going to give it up quietly.

Arcade is a golden, nerve-steeling pale ale with fortifying notes of watermelon, honeysuckle and graham cracker, designed for before and after harrowing, finger-cramping game sessions.

12 ounce can bought as part of a delivery from Beers of America and drunk at home. Dark, almost brownish gold, clear with almost no head. Aroma is grainy, toasty, some marmalade, some persimmon. Rounded bittersweet taste, more marmalade and toast, hint of tropical fruit. I've made it sound really dull but it's very well-executed. Concentrated bitterness in the finish with whispers of orange oil and black tea. Medium body with carbonation on the heavy side.

Draught at source: pours orange with white head. Apricot, sorachi ace perhaps, butterscotch. Clean and fruity. Not bad.

Very much not a “classic American pale ale”, coming across a lot more like a session IPA, what with its initial burst of bright citrus-tropical hops and a complete lack of maltiness on the back end. Vegetal note in the fade. Kind of a miss.

Month old can A: Crystal clear pale amber with a short quick head and stringy lace. S: Light scent of tart orange or tangerine citrus, toasted bread and faint caramel. T: Thin woody flavors, citrus pith and zest. A bit of lemon but also seltzery. M: Light and thin with stiff scrubbing carbonation and very clean finish. O: I was attracted to the low ABV but it is reflected in the weak flavors.
