Black IPA is a india pale ale but with a dark colour, we have choosen to take a unusual and more difficult (but better if you ask us) method to achieve this. We mash our Paradoxale as we would a normal IPA but when we reach the point of mash out, we add the roasted malt wich gives the brew its dark colour. The method gives us the colour and nutty tones of roasted malt but the short contact time doesn’t allow the roasted malt to realase it`s bitter astringent compounds, we want the bitterness to be from hops not malt.

Raven black color with HUGHE tan head. Solid lacing. Not to much aroma at first due to that enormous head. Decent intensity after a while. Medium body and a far to rich carbonation level. Fizzy mouth feeling. Destroys a lot of this beer. Roast, coffee and herbal hoppy flavor. Decent beer, but very far away from a black ipa. Some fruity notes after a while. Had to put it away for a while before it was drinkable.

33cl Bottle at RBESG 17 Grand Tasting. Dark brown colour, beige head. Aroma of roast, some chocolate, light hoppy. Flavour is likewise, not much to it but not too bad. A bit fizzy. Light bodied.

From a bottle at RBESG 2017. Pours hazy brown with a modest, beige head. Roasty aroma with pine, licorice, dark fruits and hints of herbs. Fairly balanced, nice roasty and hoppy mixture with a pleasant bitterness. Retried 2020: fizzy, thin and not so balanced, but fair enough. --- Beer merged from original tick of Paradoxale on 02 Jul 2020 at 18:00 - Score: 6

Sample from the bottle at RBESG 2017, Tallinn. Thanks mjs! Color is clear brown with small white head. Aromas and flavors: Some chocolate, some dark chocolate, some hops and malts. OK but not much black IPA elements.
