Brewed using wheat as well as the traditional ingredient of malted barley, Wheat beers traditionally hail from Germany or Belgium. Wheat is added to a brew not for its distinctive flavours – the taste can be quite subtle in comparison to many beers – but for its distinctive silky-mouth feel.
The beers can be clear (kristall) or cloudy depending on the level of filtration applied, and are highly effervescent and light in flavour, making them superbly refreshing.

Beer Kitchen Wheat beer is a classic ‘Belgian White’. It is brewed with special wheat beer yeast, which provides a spicy clove like flavour, and a modest portion of coriander, which is added to the brew during the mash to deepen the citrus fruit aromas. These flavours work with the effervescent nature of the beer to produce a tongue tingling, refreshing beer. On the nose, the gentle fizz emits a tart lemon aroma while on the tongue the beer softens to provide a well-rounded silky finish but with a cheeky hint of spice.

Serve this beer cold. It makes a perfect aperitif, cleansing the palate ready for a good meal. Or try it with a starter or light meal - the subtle flavours will not overpower delicate fish, white meats, or a crisp salad.

Bottle at La Flambe, Sutton Benger, Wiltshire. Pours a cloudy pale amber. Some decent tart lemon up front with mild spice behind. Becomes sweeter with further tastes and gradually loses character. There’s a little banana and some wheat, but it definitely stays more lemony than your average wheat beer, and for that I was grateful. By the end I was seeing it as a simple but pleasant summer refresher- not bad but nothing special either.

Bottled 330ml (O’Haras, Tampere)
Clear pale golden color, small white head. Wheaty, raw banana aroma with light citrus fruits. Light bodied. Some banana, grainy notes, light sourness and spiceyness. Unoffensive and boring witbier.

33 cl bottle @ O’Hara’s Freehouse
Fresh aroma with soapy citrus and some wheat – rather typical to a witbier. Flavour is refreshing with lots of soapy citrus, some wheat and hints of coriander. Nice.
