Dark Honey Ale

Just cause it's dark and German doesn't mean it's an alt. Based on the obscure Kottbusser style of beer, this surprisingly dry beer retains all the aroma and nuance of honey (from bees) and molasses (not from bees) creating a perception of sweetness through cool, controlled fermentation. Because we're sweet enough damn it.

Hops: Strisselspalt, Nothern Brewer, Hallertau Hersbrucker
Malts: Pils, Dark Munich, Wheat Mal, Chocolate Malt, Flaked Oats
Secret Ingredients: Honey and Molasses

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish tan coloured head, only a thin layer on top, with the body showing some lighter brown colours and even copper when held on an angle. Aroma of honey, oats, earth, molasses, prunes, raisins and a lot of caramel - nice and fragrant. Medium-bodied; Assertive honey and floral flavour at first with not much body at all and a funky metallic and earthy bite in the middle. Aftertaste is even more mild with only a moderate amount of sweetness coupled with some toasted grain and not much else - fairly simple in tasting. Overall, a decent beer, at most and passable at worst. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased two days ago at Whole Foods (Bowery) in New York, New York for US$2.99 sampled in my hotel room here on the LES of New York on 19-July-2014.

Bottle pour. Pours dark with a vanishing head. Sweet malt and chocolate aroma. Nice dark malt flavor with some chocolate. A little sweet on the finish. Interesting, unique beer. Not bad at all.

Got this bottle as a gift from someone - I forget exactly who it was, but he must have been pretty old because he had quite a bit of gray hair - anyway, this is the second kottbusser I’ve had and it is nothing like the first, so I’m not sure what to think of th "style" - this one is pretty cool - quite nutty and toasty, with rich Munich character, and complex molasses and honey - despite this, the sweetness is not too high or cloying - there really is a nice balance with the roasty notes and mild bitterness - neat beer.

A hazy brown beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of bread, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of straw, bread, caramel, and malt, leading to a dry finish. 7/3/7/3/14

Sample at Culmination Fest: Poured a brown color with white head. Aroma was sweet, malty, molasses. Taste was rugged with strong malts yet also had a sweet molasses side.

CBC Session 1. Clear deep amber - brown beer, small pale cream coloured head. Palate is light and dry. Mellow malt, whisper of very ripe orange. Nothing much else going on. Light dry finish. Pretty dull.
