Deep dark brown coloured body with a thick, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, alcohol, yeast, light spices and a hint of caramelised sugars. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt flavour with chocolate, coffee, meat, soy sauce and a lot of nuts/earth in the mix. Aftertaste is quite pungent with the malt and earthiness really coming out, some metal, a hint of sugar and a deep roasted nuttiness. Overall, a strong beer more like a brown or perhaps a light porter and not anything like a saison at all - no herbs, no grassiness, just a hint of yeast. Not my favourite and not true to any of the styles, but it was drinkable of course. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington on 11-January-2013 for US$8.99 sampled at home in [the real] Washington on 08-April-2013 a few days before heading back to the PNW.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger fairly dense tan head with good retention, that reduces t oa thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, toast, clove, pepper, coffee, caramel, raisin, light smoke, and earthy yeast esters. Damn nice aromas with nice balance, strength, and complexity of roasted malt and yeast notes; very roasted malt forward. Taste of dark chocolate, roasted malt, toast, pepper, coffee, caramel, clove, raisin, herbal, light smoke, and earthy yeast esters. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, toast, pepper, toffee, clove, raisin, herbal, light smoke, and earth on the finish for a good bit. Very nice flavor balance, robustness, and complexity; with zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and slightly crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is and damn nice black saison. Very nice balance and complexity of roasted flavors and yeast esters; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

22oz bomber pours a nice and dark brown with mahogany edges and tan head. The modest aroma is sort of cola notes, earthy, sweet malts and a touch of molasses. The taste seems similar with thick maltiness, spicy black licorice and earthy notes. It then slides into a bit of molasses as the finish approaches. Cool stuff.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours very dark brown with a foamy/creamy dark tan head. Aroma of earthy chocolate. Med body more or less. Flavor is earthy chocolate. A chocolate saison? It sort of fits. It’s dry, dark, tasty. Definitely close to the edge.

650 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with light tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of dry dark chocolate and malts. Similar stronger flavor with sweet sharp fruity notes. Very dry finish. Very nice.

Draught. Dark brown/black with foamy white head. Spicy aroma. Malt roast in the spicy flavour. This is a dark saison, and probably should be a new type of bier. Spice finish with a bit of roast.

On tap at Bottleworks, pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma of yeast, chocolate malt, light herbal notes and candied sugar. Flavour is quite sweet for a black saison, with bittersweet chocolate, candied sugar and loads of yeast. Very highly carbonated and becomes very sweet the more I drink. Decent.
