Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a dark brown colour with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is big chocolate light coffee. The flavour is moderate sweet with a sweet malt, liqourice, chocolate, dry coffee palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

50cl bottle from Alfred the Grape, Marlow. A bit of gusher on opening, but I managed to get most of it into a pint glass, where the head soon settled down to a beige ring; the colour is gourgeous, dark chestnut with a raspberry red gleam when held to the light; the aroma has a distinct hint of cocoa powder, but also some red berry fruit; the mouth feel is soft and milky with some plummy fruit that’s quite tart rather than sweet, and there’s a subtle undercurrent of chocolate of course; there’s a pleasant bitterness and a dryness from the deeply roasted malts towards the finish, as well as a very pleasant warmth. This is an excellent chocolate stout, it’s a shame it didn’t all make it into the glass!

Purchased this from brewery 26.06.13 (yesterday) drinking at home Thursday 27.06.13 pours dark brown with off-white head edging towards light tan, but up to the light the beer is actually a little lighter brown than it appears. The nose is chocolate and perhaps a little malty, in fact it is rather more subtle than you might expect, pleasant though. This is wonderful in the mouth, really soft mouthfeel, a rich chocolate grabs you straight away, lovely and smooth, in fact this has a very indulgent feel, really interesting. Getting further into this, you pick up a a nice graininess from the chocolate/cocoa and there is a decent roastiness, towards the end there it starts to leave a dryness. This is not a million miles away from Youngs Chocolate Stout which is indeed a compliment in my eyes as I rather like that beer, but this is certainly more chocolatey, I like this better, not sure how I rated Youngs Chocolate Stout but I think in a blind test I would go for this one. I really love the soft carbonation, makes me think of the aero bubble of chocolate that melts in your mouth, yes this is very, very good. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8

[500ml bottle from Alfred the Grape, Marlow] Dark brown with a small beige head and a light fizz. Roasted malt to the fore, with plain chocolate and cocoa coming through and maybe a little sherry. The chocolate and the roast malt balance each other out perfectly, and the beer does not fall into the trap that many chcolcate beers do of being sickly sweet, syrupy and artificial. It tastes good, although it could perhaps do with losing some of the fizz which hides the smoothess of the beer behind. You could perhaps accuse it of being a little one dimensional, but hey, what the hell, I like it so I’ll forgive that! It’s another winner from XT.

GD at the 14th Egham Beer Festival at the EUSC, 28/03/13. Very dark mahogony brown/light black with a good sized frothy tan head. Nose carries cocoa, sugars - slightly artificial, roast malt, dark fruits. Taste comprises dark malt, light choclate, dark fruits, treacle toffee. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry roasty finish. Decent.
