Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Gold with a cream head; citrus aroma; fruity citrus flavour; long bitter finish with some quinine. Another of those boring summer ales that seem so popular at the moment.

[cask at Hobgoblin, Reading] My local Rebellion brewery is one of those that churns out a monthly beer on a special theme, usually with a novelty name. In my experience, such beers (and I’m talking about those from all such breweries here, not just Rebellion) have a lot less effort put into them than the brewery’s main beers, and therefore tend to be rather bland, unmemorable bitters sold on the name rather than the taste. This year, Rebellion’s chosen "theme" is spies, and "Overthrow" is this month’s contribution to the "Spy Range". It’s earthy and yet surprisingly refreshing (especially as it was correctly served at cellar temperature rather than room temperature on what was a very humid day!). It’s a pleasant enough beer, but as expected there was nothing memorable here, and it was indistinguishable from all the oh-so-average bitters out there. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice when breweries provide a new beer for me to try every month - it would just be even nicer if you could tell such beers apart. I mean, why not try throwing in a mild, porter, wheat beer etc every now and then?

Cask handpull at Market Porter, Borough. Never been a Rebellion fan. Deep amber with lasting beige head. It’s ok. Some ginger mayber. I’ve had worse Rebellion beers, but it’s no better than a normal best bitter with a bit of lemon and ginger. Some toffee no aroma. Some bitterness towards the finish. Bit of toffee
