White Hawk is a traditional IPA .The IPA recipe is based on the original 1880 brew that was sent to India for the British troops. The advent of India Pale Ale was born of a need to supply beer in the 1800’s to British troops in India. This hearty, heavily hopped ale was brewed to endure the rigors of the long voyage from Great Britain.

White Hawk Original IPA was launched in California in early 2002 to meet the demand for a unique India Pale Ale. Consumer response for White Hawk IPA exceeded expectations and it is fast gaining a loyal following both in 6 pack and on draft.

12 oz. bottle. Pours dark orange with a small, off-white head. The aroma is strong pine and floral hops, with notes of coriander, vanilla, and caramel. The flavor is sweet, with a mild hop bitterness. The palate is thin, syrupy, and a little acidic. The carbonation is minimal. The aftertaste is short and malty. Overall, this a good, drinkable beer, but it lacks the hop profile of a great IPA.

Bottle @ home. Gusher though it doesn’t smell of an infection. Hazy, yellow orange appearance with a huge cream colored head. Sweet floral hoppy, honey, potpourri aroma. Somewhat bready, lightly toasty, a touch fruity, a little tangy, floral flavor. I really didn’t like this one.

Biggish deep offwhite head. Hazy amber body with light carbonation. Deep caramelly malty resiny aroma with perfumy peppermint notes. Clean and fresh. Dry-sweet nutty caramelly taste with resiny mint notes. Mid-bodied. Sharpish mouthfeel. Dry nutty wooden caramelly aftertaste with resiny citric tropical fruit notes. Really nice. Classic US IPA, clean fresh, and well executed. (0.355l bottle, from a wine shop by the Mid-Levels Escalator, Hong Kong.)

Refrigerated bottle poured into a shaker. Pours amber with finger with head. Good lacing, slightly harsh texture, medium body, and nice hop aroma. Taste is caramel malt and long floral/bitter hop finish.

Bottle, bought loose for $1.40 at Binny’s, January ’11. Practiced my "proper pour" (angle at first, then straight down, and got an amber colored beer with a short, barely off-white head. Shows a nice, piney hop smell. Hops are much bigger on the tongue, though. Pine and citrus are right there, but I also catch the earthiness of a Brit hop load (yes, I just now checked Mendocino’s web site, which says Cascade and Fuggles). Well, I like a mixed-heritage IPA myself. Thick caramel malts also at the fore. Shows its alcohol better than the Southern Tier 2X IPA I had last night.

Key Foods Brooklyn bottle ($2): Looks ok, pours a white head that leaves tiny lacing over clear amber body. Aroma is of a little bit of hops, but not nearly as much as other IPAs, also a lot of sugary malts are detectable there. Taste is a little bit on the sweet side. Moderately hoppy. Leaves some bitter aftertaste. Kind of earthy hops in my opinion. Not a great IPA, but a good beer in its own right.

bottle. pours golden/orange hue, white head. aroma, lemongrass hops, light yeasty/barnyard. flavors, citrus hops, bitterness balanced out by the caramel malts, thick and dry palate, light spicy finish. Outstanding mouthfeel, loved the mix of citrus/grapefruit and malty finish.

12oz bottle. Transparent orange-tan color. Big, frothy off -white head. Orange-citrus hop aroma. A pretty solid IPA, well balanced. Relatively big at 7%, but it is still rather clean, sessions quite nicely. Solid sticky bitterness in the aftertaste. Enjoyable, middle of the road WIPA on the strong side.
