The Single Hop Series allows us to showcase our creative side within the constraint of using a single hop.

The third in our Single Hop Series has its roots in an award winning homebrew called Roaring Queen. Historically the Belgians are not known for beers with loads of New World hops aroma, but who are we to bow down to brewing tradition when we don’t need to? The citrusy Amarillo plays well with the Belgian yeast notes, and the malt is just enough to carry the flavour combination off without getting in the way.

Keg at Leeds International Beer Festival. This one was about 10 beers in, so the palate (and memory) were becoming a little overworked. Aroma of ripe satsuma with a black pepperiness. Alcohol is prominent. A light sweetness to the taste. A yeasty bitter aftertaste. Certainly interesting.

Drafthouse Tower Bridge. Keg. Light haze on this golden, amber beer. Little pale cream coloured head. Palate starts softish but turns to good minerally carbonation. Good hops. A little fresh orange. Orange peel. Grassy hop skunk. Floral yeast, slightly bitter. Mellow tropical fruits and a little malt cream. Finishes with seltzer minerals and a mild bitterness. Tasty and interesting.

Bottle at home in Barbados, 20th August 2013. This is the best I have had from WB, good aroma, nice palate and full of flavour, Belgian yeast comes through nicely. Very refreshing, nice one

Keg tap at EBF XV, 09/08/13. Hazed mid golden with a good sized off white head. Nose is bitter orange, light pine, hint of piss, burnt caramel, grapefruit, hops. Taste comprises light spice, vanilla essence, bitter grapefruit, orange pith. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, smooth drinking with hop bitterness in the finish. Ok but a little unbalanced, came across as a saison/IPA hybrid crossover type of thang!

Cask @ cask pub and kitchen, small sample. Hazy golden color, short head. Aroma of fruity hop and loads of spicy yeast. Medium bitter in taste. Too much yeast character, peppery, dry. Not my kind of beer.

Cask at CP&K. It pours cloudy amber with a small off-white head. The nose is earthy, resin, spice, wood, orange and tangerine. The taste is bitter-sweet, juicy orange, tangerine, mango, resin, alcohol kick, earth, touch of spice and wood with a dry, bitter finish. Medium+body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Nice Amarillo character. Tasty stuff.
