(Previously called Malefactor and before that Gilgamesh) Developed as a stronger version of a Flanders-style Red Ale, Crimson is our only sour aged in bourbon barrels that have been previously used to age beer at least once. This creates petite notes of bourbon character, and darker, charred wood character. Crimson also undergoes a turbid mash, with a portion of flaked maize being boiled with the rest of the malt bill, including Vienna and caramel malts. A different cocktail of microorganisms are involved in fermentation, which creates sour notes, and hints of cherry pie. Crimson is aged for up to 8 months or more before packaging.

Big thanks to Gription79 for the share. It pours with a clear deep copper body that supports a full light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up smooth even sweet malts as well as a mix of peach, lime and grapefruit with a light and soft vinegar and then mild sour sort of tartness in the background. The taste begins mildly sweet and moving quickly into vinegar and some tartness. It starts pretty vinegar like and stays that way right into the finish. There’s plenty of tartness and vinegar notes here to keep the "sour-heads" happy.

750 ml bottle. Pours a brown/reddish color with a small beige head. A big sour nose with fruit and vanilla. The flavor was complicated and complex with vanilla, sweet molasses, wood, intense sourness, acidic at times, deep Flemish brown character. Great presentation.

Location: Bottle at Nerd Beer Epic Weekend, 1/26/13
Aroma: The nose is tart and sour fruit, yeasty too, it is both sweet and funky, bourbon is minimal
Appearance: It pours an unclear reddish-brown without much head or lace
Flavor: Flavor-wise, it has plenty of berry sweetness and tartness to it, and leathery notes
Palate: This one has a good feel, soft carbonation, some acidity, and absolutely no heat
Overall Impression: This is a nice sour. It has a good blend of sweetness and tartness, and works quite well. The alcohol is crazy well hidden too. I would have guessed it at about 7-8%. Good stuff.
