We have never made a Double Black IPA, kind of odd really as our Inktvis has been with us for many years now and is a staff and fan favourite. Until now that is... Named for a pair of sea monsters out of Greek mythology famous for terrorizing sailors, our Scylla & Charybdis collides a boatload of tropical and piney hop flavour with a wave of warming chocolate, floating at a potent yet quaffable 8.5%.

COD: 18/12/24. Zeer donker, vrijwel zwart, met een dikke, fijne bruine kraag die redelijk lang blijft hangen. Geur van harsige hop, dennennaalden, geroosterde mout. Droppig retronasaal. Smaak is droppig, bitter, wat geroosterd. Lichte tot medium body. Lekker geroosterd bittere nasmaak die lang blijft.

(Draft at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 19 Feb 2025) Black colour with frohty, beige head. Malty, roasted, hoppy nose with notes of citrus, coffee, chocolate and pine needles. Malty, roasted, hoppy taste with coffee, chocolate, grapefruit, pine needles and a generous citric/piney bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, with a slight sweetness. Rich and well made black IPA, with a generous hop presence. Very nice.

Can at home. Almost black with big chocomousse head. Lots of roasted malts, ash, dark chocolate, earthy, coffee, soft hops. Over medium sweet and bitter. Over medium bodied with a bit dry and thin finish. Great beer, but it seems way more roasted than hoppy to me.

Can from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is piney and roasty with notes of chocolate, coffee, piney hop, orange, roasted malt. The higher abv adds a pleasant substance to the body. Finishes medium plus bitter. Very good, catchy name too!

Op tap bij Arendsnest. Zwarte kleur, beige kraag. Grassig, dennen, gebrand, chocolade, hint van koffie, bitter, mooie BIPA maar had ook met 6% afgekund. Desalniettemin erg lekker. Lichte tot medium body.

330ml. Opaque colour, steady beige head. Aroma is toasted with licorice and fruity hops. Medium-bodied. Roasted, bitter hops, licorice, dark chocolate and some fruityness. Bitter CDA, more on roasted/bitter side than one with fruityness.

330ml can. Jet black colour with average to huge, thick, dense, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, moderately to mostly lasting, moderately lacing, dark beige head. Roasty, chocolately, dark malty and piney, slightly resinous, hoppy aroma, notes of liquorice, pine, resin, a tuch of juniper berry. Taste is bitter, roasty, dark malty and bitter, piney and resinous hoppy, notes of dark chocolate, some coffee, notes of pine, resin, a touch of liquorice, juniper berry, minimally ashy overtones.
Oily-watery texture, smooth, soft and minimally greasy, simultaneously minimally dry palate, fine, dense, creamy carbonation.
Way more homogeneous, no real dichotomy generating than the name implies (if an election is involved), continuous bitterness, nice dirty aspects; on the other hand paradigmatically representing the paradoxicality of the style - formidable.
