Copper-bronze. Has a floral-herbal (sage, mint) aroma. Has a toasty character, a bit crackerlike, and the alcohol shows through a bit in the finish.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW. Pours clear, reddish-brown with a fine, white head. Good and hoppy aroma, some orange citrus, caramel, honey, bread. Medium sweet flavor, good bread, light toast, some earthy and lightly herbal bitterness, and a bit juicy overall. Light to medium in body with average carbonation. Some bread, caramel and juicy citrus to finish. Very nice beer overall.

Had high hopes that this ’Strong Pale Ale’ would be good and hoppy. It’s not but it is a balanced clear amber beer with an overdry palate. Otherwise unremarkable.

Cask, gravity dispensed, at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading, at 5.0% ABV. Poured gold with a ring of loose cream head; the aroma is full of rich, earthy, malts; medium bodied with a slight sweet flavour, with lots of malts and a metallic spinach edge; the finish is dry and lightly bitter and balances the malts well. Overall a very satisfying ESB.
