A Belgian wheat beer brewed with a touch of rye and a massive addition (over 1,000 lbs. per 40-barrel batch) of plump, ripe blackberries grown by Agriberry in Hanover County, Hardywood Virginia Blackberry offers an assertive fruit character while remaining extremely refreshing. Ruby hued with the bright aroma of fresh bramble berries, this beer’s pleasantly gentle body leads to a rather dry, rounded fruit finish, making it irresistible on a hot summer day.

Bottle at Velootje in Ghent, the owner of which received it as a gift straight from the brewer, apparently. Thin but stable off-white head, deep and warm pinkish orange colour. Aroma of stewed pear, yoghurt, buttermilk, even a touch ureum, soapy wheat, sour cream and indeed berries, but hard to say if they are blackberries or something else. Very fruity taste, estery, lots of sweet-sour berries but hints of passion fruit and orange too, soft carbo, smooth and somewhat oily, thinnish mouthfeel, wheaty, a bit soapy and grainy, drying tartness in the end (berry juice effect) while sweet maltiness lingers; hops are only indirectly at work. Interesting artisanal fruit beer, perhaps lacking a bit in complexity and body.

On tap at Mellow Mushroom. Pours a murky pink. Aroma of berries, but it almost seems to me to be more blueberry than blackberry. Perhaps my nose is off. Subtle blackberry and wheat flavor.
