A dark chestnut ale made using chocolate malt which imparts a malty tone with a hint of chocolate. Although the ale is dark, it is smooth drinking and ideal for Autumnal evenings!

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading at 5% abv. Deep mahogany-brown with a thick beige head and a light fizz. Smooth, chocolatey and oaky. Lots of chocolate actually and a touch of smoke at the back of the throat. Some nuttiness too. A touch of slightly sour liquorice in the aftertaste maybe lets it down a tadge, but nevertheless this is a pretty decent beer. Texture is especially good thanks to the superb condition- well done ’Spoons!

50cl bottle from the brewery. Dark chestnut with a rapidly fading white head - the pour was sparklingly clear at first, but it was hard to avoid the large amount of sedement, resulting in a rather cloudy finish; the aroma is malty and slightly spicy (from the yeast probably); the taste is malty and nutty; with a soft chocolatey finish. Very drinkable.

(Cask at Gallows Bird Real Ale Festival ’13) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was small, dense and lightly brown. Aroma had roasted malts and chocolate. Palate was medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, sweetness, chocolate and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. Nice tasty real ale.

Cask at the Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival. Shares with ChrisO. Clear brown beer, little pale tan bubbly head. Okay malts, light and smooth. Mild bubblegum esters. Dry finish. Light and easy going but too one dimensional.
