Roman Imperial Stout has an abundance of chocolate and roasted coffee flavours and aromas.
Inspired by our brewers Italian family, this silky smooth, rich stout is balanced by a plentiful supply of powerful resinous hops to match the high alcoholic strength.

(Gravity cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 23 Nov 2012) Black colour with brief head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of black coffee, dark chocolate and cacao. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, black coffee, hints of liquorice and a generous cacao bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, with a touch of sweetness. Well rounded, tasty and excellently balanced. Lovely beer.

Bottle bought from the Pigs Ear Beer Festival. Black pour with a beige head. Blackberry, chocolate, coffee and raisin aroma. Dark roast coffee flavour with lots of plain chocolate and raisins. Good alcohol burn. Dry, roasty finish. Nice.

Cask at Pigs Ear Festival 2012. black beer thin tan collar. Lots of choc which is nice. A bit of choc sponge. Heat comes through as a spiciness. Pretty good. A melted bourneville choc quality to it. Good.

Cask at The White Horse Old Ale Festival, London. Pours black with a fine, brown bubble head. Tangy dark malt nose. Medium sweet flavor with light licorice, bittersweet cocoa, moderate charred malt roastiness. Medium bodied with fine, soft carbonation. Bitter, oily cocoa finish with very faint warming alcohol and earthy bitterness. It’s decent, although I’m not a fan of that tangy edge some British imperial stouts have.

Cask at the 13th Egham Beer Fest. It pours opaque very dark brown with a small tan head. The nose is toast, soft dark fruit, chocolate, touch of manure, baking cocoa and earth. The taste is roasted malt, coffee, charcoal, dark chocolate, gateaux, dark fruit and earth with a dry, roasty finish. Full body, soft carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Nice chocolate aspect. Dangerously drinkable. An impressive brew from Downton.

Gravity Dispense at Wandsworth Common Halloween Beer Festival 2012. Pitch black with a thin bubbly coffee head. Big roast malt nose, dollop of chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Tastes of roast mals, dark toffee, dark chocolate, touch of coffee and a little booze. Full end of medium bodied with fine carbonation and a smooth feel. Good stuff!
