Cask at the eagle in Battersea. A amber coloured pour with a stodgy speckled off white head. Aroma is chewy toffee, treacle, twig. Palate is semi sweet, creamy, lowish carbonation. Flavour is composed of medium sweet malts, chewy toffee, grass, little thin.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Amber with a scummy white head; citrusy aroma; bready taste with some citrus; and a clean doughy finish. I thought this was better than recent reviews would suggest, but still not a great beer.

Hamilton Hall Spoons. Almost clear gold beer, little white head. Semi dry palate. Mild carbonation. Mild malt. Tangy orange hops. Ruined by a fair bit of soap and sulphur. Semi dry finish with a soapy aftertaste. A wrong-un.

Cask at Hamilton Hall, JDW, London. I didn’t think this was a good beer, but attributed the poor quality to poor condition - interesting to see that there appears to be a clear trend in terms of low ratings, suggesting that it’s a more fundamental issue than cask condition. Pours clear gold with a fine, white foam head. Pretty rubbish overall. Pale malts, some ash, minerals, faint dough. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes with more dry minerals, some white bread, lingering stones. Pretty dire, this one.

Cask @ JDW Muckle Cross, Elgin
Light amber, clear, thin white head
Aroma - manure, hay, rubber, very poor
Taste - damp hay, manure, fag ash, smoky, awful
Palate - thinnish body. Finish - very dry, bitter, odd smoky, metallic, lingering cigarettes
Overall - Dreadful - the description on JDW’s website must be for another beer
