A decadent stout, inspired by the special British ales exported to the Russian Court, during the 18th century. It is black and viscous like crude oil from the oil fields in the Caspian Sea. The flavor is dominated by dark notes of burnt sugar, spicy hops and smokiness from peaked malt.

Bottle at the 0-65% Tasting, London - thanks to Kenny. Pours murky brown with a huge, beige foam head. Lightly medicinal dark malt nose. Big sweet flavor with Band-Aid smokiness, alcohol, moderate roast. Full bodied with average carbonation. Fairly warming on the finish with chocolate, alcohol and further Band-Aid smoke character. Pretty alright.

The 0-65 tasting. Four guys, fourteen beers, average abv 12.9%, 65 mins! Clear dark red - amber beer. Big fluffy pale tan head. Smooth palate, light, soft and airy. Sweetish malts with a touch of smoke and TCP but it works okay. A little cherry fruits. Finishes smooth with more fruit and smoke. Seductive.

Bottle. A dense, finger-thick dark beige head sits on top of a dark brown body that looks unclear. It’s roasted and lightly smoked on the nose, with licorice, some peat and dark sugars. The flavor is quite sweet, but in a pleasant way, and with enough alcohol to prevent it from being cloying. Licorice, caramel sauce, roasted malts, some peat and a touch of dark sugar. Full body, warming and with a pleasant level of carbonation. Lasting roasted finish with a pleasant warmth. Certainly a beer I could drink more or. 121110

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Aroma is rather floral/perfumey with a little smooth burnt malt. Finally a little chocolate. Med body. Flavor is coffee and chocolate - and there’s a "crude" burnt malt. Moves on towards dark milk chocolate. Interesting and tasty. Finishes with a little heat and a touch of smokey.

Bottle from Vinens Verden. Black with a lasting tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and licorice, with pine and grapefruit hops. Sweetish malty flavour with a hard roasted note, and lots of hop character and bitterness. An intense, but actually quite easy drinking beer that doesn’t feel any more historically close to Empress Catherine?s imperial stout than the Soviet worker on the label - but a great beer anyway.
