Cask at Brodies. It pours amber, with a decent white head. The nose is caramel, toffee, toast, warming spice, raisin, leather and leaf. The taste is varnish, resin, pine, raisin, currant, leaf, leather, underlying caramel sweetness, wood polish and alcohol warmth, with a long bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Well balanced. An interesting and flavoursome brew.

Cask at the Old Coffee House, London. Pours clear copper with a tight, off-white foam cap. Ripe fruits in the nose with caramel, toast and pine. Decent flavor, but at first there seems to be some incoherence. Some berries and fruity hops, pine, mild sweetness, toast, light earth. This feels like it should be sweeter, especially given that it’s 6.8% and from Brodies. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly sticky finish, toasty malts, pine, leaves, toasty sugar, some minerals. Hmm, pretty solid overall, despite my initial misgivings. It drinks like a nice sessioner, but for whatever reason I just get the impression I should be getting more out of this. Strange. But as I said, still a very solid beer.

On tap at the Old Coffee House. Clear amber beer. Tidy bubbly pale tan head. Palate is fresh and semi dry with moderate carbonation. A little creamy malt supports nice strong piney hops, bitterish. Smooth undertone of citrus and tropical fruits. Smooth finish, pretty bloody good and very suppable.
