A dark reddish brown ipa with a thick big bubbled mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with light oak notes, light resinous hops, light treacle, pleasant. In mouth, sweet caramel malt with dark fruits, light resinous notes, alcohol warmth, very nice. Bottle from 2011.

Bomber from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA opened 8/5/11. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of herbal hops, peppery wood notes and some maltiness. The taste is bitter herbal hops, vanilla, wood, faint whisky notes. Medium bodied. Decent.

Pour is a dark orange with a small white head. Aroma is a slight hop with a nice vanilla and wood smoke. Flavor is a nice hop to start then comes a decent oak from the barrel aging. Finish has some bourbon notes but nothing to overpower. This was a different IPA and quite nice with the barrel aging

Draft at Paradiso Dupont. Pale golden color, white edge head. Aroma of bourbon. Taste of bourbon. The oak overwhelms this one. I’m not sure that aging an IPA is a good idea anyway, in oak or anything else. But any beer that spends too long in oak, or is oak or bourbon flavored in some other way, risks overshadowing the characteristics of the beer. IMHO.

22 oz bottle. Pours an orange amber with an off-white head. Very piney aroma, very floral, with some caramel, bourbon, oak. Very floral flavor as well, green herbs, with watered-down bourbon and oak. It’s all an odd combaination. Just not a beer that should be barrel aged, I guess.

On tap at the Vintage in Boardman, really nice place. Virtually no smell, just somewhat clean volatile fumes. Looks like pale lager with a creamy head. Initial flavors has some woodiness in there. Very strong on the alky side of things. Rather whiskey like in attitude and during the finish the whiskey takes over. Quite rude to a lager lover. Probably should be in the DPA category.

On tap. Poured a clear dark amber with a near white head that completely dissipates. Aroma was mainly pine and oak with a bit of underlying bourbon and grass for a nice contrast. Flavor began sweet with a bit of bourbon and grass, but the pine grew with a slight oak undertone.

Had a chance to sample this at RFD in Washington D.C. Pours a hazy, cloudy, orange amber with a thin, cloudy white head. The aroma was the only let down, the hops were absent, some light lemons and grapefruits and the oak is faint at best. The flavor however, is excellent. Grapefruits, lemons, some tropical fruit, oak, vanilla, caramel, bourbon, sour mash. In my opinion, IPAs are very difficult to barrel age since most of the time the oak kills the hops but not here. It must be blended well since the oak is married well. Finish has some light heat and some light bitterness with a touch of chalkiness. Very nice, my favorite I’ve had from New Holland.

On tap at New Holland. Slightly hazy orange body, thin to medium tight off-white head. Big, buttery oak flavors, tannic, strongly influenced by barrel aging, with subdued citric and piney hops and light breadiness. Unfortunately the aroma was harder to detect, as they serve everything in mason jars. Oak and alcohol dominate the IPA flavors, so this is a showcase for New Holland’s oak aging process. Could use a little more heft to carry the oak.
