This long-time favorite brewers’ choice beer was created to hop us challenge expectations and keep us true. We now expose it to you.
Using roasted barley, chocolate malt, and Midnight Wheat (tm), KGB has a color that is as dark as a torrid past, a body as full as a well kept dossier, and a taste a complex as a conspiracy theory.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. 2011 vintage. Pours dark brown color with red highlights and a tan head. Big chocolate aroma with some roasted malts. Roasted malts and sweet milk chocolate flavors with some coffee. Moderate bitterness. Full body with soft carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. Pretty good. Thanks Craig.

Bottle from Malt & Vine. Pours pretty dark brown with a 2 finger creamy/bubbly dark tan head. Aroma of smooth dark malt and chocolate. Near full bodied. Flavor is rather bitter burnt toast, and some chocolate. Maybe a touch of coffee. It’s strongly flavored. Pretty good. Be interesting to see how it comes out of a barrel.

On tap at Taps on Washington. Pours a very dark brown with a small beige head that diminishes quickly to nothing. The aroma is sweet roasted malt and chocolate. Thin mouthfeel with a smokey malt and oak and a bit watery with a lingering bitter finish. Hides alcohol decently, a good Imperial Stout from Widmer.

2011 bottle - lovely pour - pure black, with a thick, frothy, lasting tan head - bittersweet chocolate nose, with an intense espresso roastiness, a bit of vanilla sweetness and a hint of smoke, alcohol and woody hops - creamy mouthfeel, medium/full body - moderately sweet up front, but strong notes of roast/char and relatively strong bitterness that seems equal parts black malt and woody hops arrive fairly quickly - the beer dries out a little bit at that point - lingering bittersweet chocolate, alcohol and wood - bitterness is intense but never astringent of overwhelming - nice.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown, near black body and a large and lasting tan head. Aromas of coffee, cinnamon, fresh bread, dark fruits, chocolate, molasses and brown sugar. Some alcohol as well. Flavors are a bit nutty, bitter chocolate, roast, dark fruits. A bit of astringency. Creamy carbonation with a mocha finish. Good stuff.

12 oz bottle into an Allagash chalice. Pours black but shows ruby red highlights when held up to the light. Has a nice light tan head that dissipates in about a minute, leaving a skiff and collar of foam; a little lace is left on the glass. Nice mocha aroma. Also some chocolate milk and Whoppers in there. Taste is bittersweet. Carbonation is medium to low (just right), body is medium-full, mouthfeel is creamy. A very smooth, easy-drinking IRS.

Bottle. I’ve been wanting to try this for years, but somehow it never was available. Poured smooth black with thin fast dissipating beige head. Roast malt and chocolate notes in the aroma. Flavour is wonderful, full bodied, roast malt, chocolate and coffee, toasted rusks. Full rusky finish.
