The taste is soft, sweet, sticky, oily, toasty sugars, Turkish Delight, toffee, candied fruit, tangy, jammy, currant, fruit cake, After Eights and light alcohol warmth on the back-end. Medium body and fine carbonation. Plenty going on. Good fun.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Kenny. Pours rich ruby-brown with a foamy, tan head. The aroma holds aged caramel, leathery berries, hints of butterscotch. Medium sweet flavour with meaty, well toasted malts, some oxidation, lightly tangy dried berries, dates. Medium to full bodied, oily and chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming finish with further berry tang, some toasted caramel, earthy bitterness. Has aged OK.

Bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Thank you James, bottle 455 out of 876. Appearance - deep opaque black, with a thin fawn head, but this definitely hangs around. Nose - intense treacle, molasses and charcoal notes. Taste - black jack sweets, molasses again. Smoke at the back. Palate - rich and full bodied with a tangy dry middle section that leads into a long, long finish. Overall - this is altogether a much darker beer than expected for a barley wine. Should this have been under English Strong Ale. It’s a beast and a bit of a gnarly beast at that. But it grows.

Bottle at home. Pours very dark brown, thin beige head. Big sweet toffee aromas, some dark fruit and malt. Taste brings more sweetness, a light booze note, and roasty bitterness. Very nice.

Cask at the White Horse winter beer festival, 22/11/13, listed as Granite 2013 but presume this is the same beer? Opaque dark mahogony brown with a good sized light tan covering that retains well. Nose is rich dark fruits, spice, orange peel, burnt toffee, booze strains. Taste comprises toffee, candied orange peel, Xmas cake, pinch of spice, deep rich dark fruit notes. Full bodied, soft carbonation, smooth palate, boozey warming closure. Solid cask barley wine, booze does become a little harsh at times.

Opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Creamy malt nose. Palate is soft and airy. Fine carbonation. Minerals. Tangy malts, flirting with sour. The promised burned toffee is here. Sweetish marmite. A little sour cherry before the finish which brings more marmite. Unusual and tasty but I could not drink loads of this.
