Imperial Stouts were originally brewed in the early 19th century for export from Britain to the imperial court of Russia’s Catherine the Great.
The high alcoholic content prevented the beer from freezing in transport in the Baltic Sea.
Our Imperial Stout has a rich, malty sweetness, notes of dried fruits & a robust full body. This brew will improve and develop complexity over time and has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive.

Bottle from Utobeer, Borough Market. Black pour with a quickly diminishing beige head. Chocolate, coffee and vanilla nose. Raisin, chocolate and a little coffee in the taste. Sweet, roasty mouthfeel. Dry. Good stuff.

Bottle from 12 stouts of christmas 2012. Pitch black with thick dense light fudge coloured head that sticks around. It certainly looks the part. Nose is earthy with faint oak. Also roast malts in the nose, but no huge.
The first thing that pops out about the flavour is the boozyness. There is also a touch of solvent / fusel alcohols in there. Finish a bitter roast coffee and burnt sugar and lingers well.
Body is moderately full, but could be more full.
Overall the alcohol is just too present in this.

Bottle from brewery 291212
Black, dirty tan gushing head, very fizzy from bottle, settles to thin layer with good lacing
Aroma - Deep dark malts, dark fruits, mellow roasted malts, touch of wood
Taste - Rich dark malts. soft mellow roasted malts, dark fruity malts, touch of soft sweet coffee, soft plain chocolate, lots of sweet dark malts and some mellow chocolate, flavours blended well together and very smooth, not a complex impy, easy drinking
Palate - Soft carb (after settled in glass), medium to full body, very creamy texture. Finish is quite short, smooth rich dark fruity malts with some warming alcohol and cocoa
Overall - This is a really smooth imperial stout, no harsh flavours with a creamy texture, not demanding and very well made

Bottle at home (from Bristol Beer Factory website) 04/12/12. Mid black with a dirty coffee head that quickly dissipates to the edges leaving a thin film. Nose is dark malts, dark fruits, liqourice and a little spice. Tastes of dark fruits, touch of Xmas pudding, hint of chocolate, dark sugars, dark malts, a little nutty. Full bodied with fine carbonation leading to a sweet fruity finish with a hint of booze. Fairly complex and well executed, flavours come out more as it warms.

Bottle at Pat’s Birthday Tasting at Chriso’s, London. Pours a slightly oily black-brown with a beige head. Rich cocoa and roast nose, with light earthy tones. Medium sweet flavor with toasted dark sugars, roast, and slight tang on the malts. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Tangy dark malt finish with moderate roast. OK stuff.

Bottle at my Pre-CBC Tune-Up Tasting. It pours very dark brown, with a bubbly tan head. The nose is varnish, charcoal, chocolate, caramel, toffee and toasted coconut. The taste is roasted malt, caramel, brown sugar, toast, charcoal, touch of tangy fruit, smoke, toasted coconut and some alcohol warmth, with a dry-roasted finish. Full body and moderate carbonation. A decent imperial stout, if a little unexciting.

Opaque and near black in colour, with a slight, off-white head. Slightly sweet aroma of chocolate, blackberries and liquorice. Flavour began with some caramel sweetness, before more plain chocolate, fruit and a warming, bitter finish. Very enjoyable.

Bottle directly from the Bristol Beer Factory, Bristol, consumed at home 29.01.12 Pours dark, dark brown with a small filminess the head (what there was of it) soon disappeared. Little bit of meatiness, some Oxo, its good for not being sweet or to cloying, and with that in mind it reminds me a little of something like a Harveys Imperial Stout though with the greatest of respect to this decent beer it is not quite in that league. I don’t get too much of the dried fruitiness but I do get a slight sauciness and touch of salt. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov13 3.4
