In 1996 a little brewpub named Cervecerias La Cruda opened in downtown San Diego. While open for less than a year, the beers were nothing short of remarkable, and that fall, brewer Troy Hojel and his assistant, Tomme Arthur, won the Gold Medal for Robust Porters at the Great American Beer Festival. The Makanudo Porter was only the third San Diego beer to ever to earn a GABF medal. 2011… San Diego is now the epicenter of Craft Brewing and our homebrewing community thrives like never before. This past April Troy Hojel, Skip Virgilio and Tomme Arthur, each a homebrewer who followed their dreams and turned pro, reunited for the first time in 15 years and recreated that legendary La Cruda Porter. Their hope was to send a message in a bottle out to homebrewers everywhere: Never stop daring, Never stop experimenting. An most of all, never stop imagining the places beer can take us.

Aroma is fairly fruity with some balanced roast and chocolate malt but the malt is fairly subdued. The fruit is plum, cherry an fig. Slight oxidation notes. Medium caramel an light toffee character. Pours a dark brown with ruby an garnet highlights. Very clear beer. Thick, medium head with decent persistence that slowly recedes leaving a film on the edges. Flavor is maltier than the aroma with some balanced chocolate an roast, but balanced more towards roast. Very fruity with cherry, plum and fig. Some caramel and toffee. Moderate bitterness. Some light coffee notes. Low astringency. Slight oxidation in the flavor as well. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied and a touch watery with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall a nice beer, but I let it age for way too long and it has become overly estery and a bit oxidized. The malt character seems to have faded but I remember it was nice when fresh. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Opaque dark brown porter, good pale tan head. Smooth palate, a little dry and airy. Light touch of dark malt, no roast or bitterness but some sweet lactose. A little tang. Touch of fruits, well buried. Light dry finish. Something of an ephemeral porter.

Flaske 1 pint 6 fl. oz. spandert av Rune under bonusseanse i Skibotn 5 Okt 12. Ultramørkebrun. Bra skum med litt farge. Varer en liten stund men flater nesten helt ut. God sjokolade/kakaoaroma. Smaken er sjokolade og forsiktig røstet malt. Veldig tydelige smaker. Innholdsrik etikett. KI=4

Big bottle from Vinmonopolet Vika. Lasting tan-coloured head, fragile lacing. Deep, rosewood coloured body. Inviting smell of chocolate pudding. Chocolate and cocoa flavour offset by a malty bitter ending. Oily palate. Soft, smooth and elegant. Shared with Finn on a Friday eve with the ladies in Skibotn, 05.10.2012).

Bottle at home. Pours very deep redbrown to black. A one finger wide brown head. Aromas of chocolate and coffee. In addition to this the flavour has more sweet malt of milk chocolate, leather and wood. Medium bitterness. Smooth and oily mouthfeel. Overall a delicious and balanced porter. A dessert on its own. Yummy.

0.65l bottle. Pours a dark brown body with a big fizzing light tan almost fluffy head . Aroma has thin coffee tones with thin licorice, thin chocolate, some sour/acidic berries and thin cardboardy hints. Really mild and kinda watery. Not at all what I had hoped nor expected. As expected though, it has a lively fizzing carbonation level and again a somewhat thin oily mouthfeel. Nice flavors. Well roasted malts mixed with something light sour-ish, chocolate, nuts, thin coffee and caramel. A nice little bitterness as well in here. Yeah, nice enough I guess, no off-flavors, but for me it just does not push any of the right buttons this one. I had hoped for something more/else. 26.01.2012

Bottle, 22oz, at Patricks. It pours an unclear, dark brown body under a finger thick beige head. The aroma has roasted malts, alcohol, chocolate, some hints of dried fruits and a hoppy touch. The flavor has roasted malts, some coffee and chocolate and a nice bitterness. Full body, smooth and pleasantly carbonated. Sure a pleasant one, tasteful and smooth. 120128
