In 1996 a little brewpub named Cervecerias La Cruda opened in downtown San Diego. While open for less than a year, the beers were nothing short of remarkable, and that fall, brewer Troy Hojel and his assistant, Tomme Arthur, won the Gold Medal for Robust Porters at the Great American Beer Festival. The Makanudo Porter was only the third San Diego beer to ever to earn a GABF medal. 2011… San Diego is now the epicenter of Craft Brewing and our homebrewing community thrives like never before. This past April Troy Hojel, Skip Virgilio and Tomme Arthur, each a homebrewer who followed their dreams and turned pro, reunited for the first time in 15 years and recreated that legendary La Cruda Porter. Their hope was to send a message in a bottle out to homebrewers everywhere: Never stop daring, Never stop experimenting. An most of all, never stop imagining the places beer can take us.

660 ml bottle @ Patricks. Dark brown body with a small beige head. Nice aroma of dark chocolate with a hint of vanilla and toffee, quite fruity. Flavor of malt, dark chocolate, coffee, nuts and yeast with a rather robust bitterness. Medium body, what is rather surprisingly taking all the flavors in consideration. A bit alcoholic vinous or acidic in the aftertaste. Unusually but very nice.

Bottle at Brewdog Aberdeen. It pours very dark brown, with a thick beige head. The nose is chocolate, wood, caramel and dark fruit. The taste is very fruity: blueberry, blackcurrant, raisin, as well as wood, caramel, roasted malt, chocolate and fudge, with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Great balance and very drinkable.

Bottled. An unclear brown beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of chocolate and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and chocolate as well as lighter notes of bread, leading to a dry and bitter finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.

Black color; generous head. The aroma is full of chocolate, with some coffee too, and light sourness. Correct body structure; the mouthfeel is quite dry; there is some chocolate flavor, ending with a light dusty feeling. Correct bitterness. Average.
