Quercus Vitis Humulus is our brewer’s tribute to the mighty oak, luscious grape, and humble hop. Our homage begins with a bold 27 degree plato barley wine ale, warm fermented with Bohemian lager yeast which we then blended with French grape juice and fermented in a second time with pure culture of Champagne yeast. When our brewers thought this intricate brew was complete, they aged it on lightly toasted French Oak. The six week journey through our brewery results in a deeply complex ale. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed brewing it.

Deep ruby-tinted amber coloured body with copper highlights and a thick dense tan head. Aroma of strong yeast, malt, raisins, pit fruits, apples and a bit of alcohol. Full-bodied; Deep malty and pit fruit flavours with a pungent yeastiness showing throughout with a lot of fruits, sweetness, alcohol and pungent flavours. Aftertaste strong and deep - pit fruits, caramel, yeast and alcohol - that’s about it. Overall, a decent beer - perhaps a bit odd for me, because I’m not sure of the style or attempted beer, but decent to try, and perhaps a bit too malty, sweet and pungent for me. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia on 18-March-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 14-April-2010.

Location: Cask at Blind Tiger, 2/11/10

Overall Impression: First off, this is a pretty strange one. Dark golden color. This one has a lot of stuff going on, some grape, earth/wood, lots of sugar, alcohol, etc. There is quite a lot of booze here, thick, and sticky. Otherwise, the best way to describe it is just strange and hot. I'm glad I tried this one, but I wouldn't necessarily rush out for it again.

Bottle thanks to thirdeye11. Pours with a golden body and a minimal head. Aroma of styrofoam, grape, wheat and a ton of fusel alcohol! Taste is vodka, cloying DFH Midas Touch (which I actually like), styrofoam and garbage. Super attenuated and dry, burning alcohol. This beer sounds good in theory, but is really just a train wreck. Poorly executed. Only six weeks to ferment with secondary with champagne yeast and another source of sugar? Wow, no wonder some of their beers taste the way they do.

Cask at Blind Tiger. This was an interesting beer. A lot going on. There was definitely some barley-wine sweetness and richness. But then, I also detected some funky yeast action. The flavor was complex with some fruity sweetness and mild hop bite. The finish was decidedly alcoholic and warming. I enjoyed it and it was a definite departure from the other beers I drank tonight.

Clear amber color with a thin white head that settles to leave scant lacing. Aroma of new grapes and citrus. Flavor has lots of fruit, but not well balanced. No hops to speak of.

Sampled at the January 09 Metro Detroit Tasting. Thanks to whoever brought this! Poured a hazy orange/ocre with a small brown head. Aroma had some earthy notes as well as candied sugars and burnt sugar. Also picked up a bit of grape. Flavor was sweet as well with a bit of sweet grains, burnt sugar, candied sugar and oak.

Sample at the "From Russia With Suds" tasting on 01/02/10: The beer is an orange-amber color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing. Aroma of yeast, sour fruit and malt aromas. Medium body with flavors of earthy malt, yeast, hops and vine fruits. The finish is earthy and malty with a sour grape and yeast aftertaste. Oak doesn’t really come through much. Overall an interesting take on a Barley Wine, but not a great beer in the end.

On tap at Churchkey, Washington DC. Pours a transparent, caramel, orange amber with a thin, creamy, lacing white head. Aroma is nice, sweet, hops, pine, bready, slightly spicy. I thought the flavor was outstanding, it starts with the oak, buttery, vanilla, woody, then the grapes kick in, sweet, fruity, white grape, tropical fruits. The hops kick in at the end, grapefruit, a little pine. Finish is sticky and slightly bitter. I thought this worked really well.
