A traditional 80/- made with East Lothian barley. There is a lot to be said for a classic style done well, and Drovers embodies this.

4.3% - Light brown colour with lasting head. There's a fair whack of aniseed that even lingers in the aftertaste.

Clear red beer, beige head. Not much aroma. Fruity malt flavour. Bit watery in the finish. Not Tryst's best work but it's drinkable.

On keg at Cloisters. Appearance - deep amber to red with a nice lacy head. Nose - toffee and an edge of orange. Taste - the toffee piles on in. Some nuts. There’s always a percentage of nutters. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry crunchy finish. Overall - decent example of the style.

Hazy amber beer, small cream colour head. Fruity nose, lightly sour. Palate is light, semi dry and minerally crisp. Light brett. Moderately sour generic fruits, cherry and orange identifiable. Crisp finish. Not sure if the end result was what the brewer intended, but it’s all right.

500ml bottle from Real Ale Warehouse. Pours clear copper brown, thick off-white head. Aromas of light toffee and herbs. Taste has more herbal bitterness, slight nutty quality. Medium body, prickly carbonation. Abrupt finish. Ok, if a bit thin.

A present from the Falkirk Wheel: my bottle is the ’Wheel Ale’ version. 500ml bottle conditioned: BBD Sep 2013, poured slowly into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 25 July 2013. Lovely looking beer: deep ruby/brown with a huge lightly tanned head on top. Malty smell and taste: crisp and sharp also, this is a complex brew. Roasted malts leap out the glass into your nose, semi-sweet and almost chocolatey in nature. Yeast notes appear as the beer warms a little, adding complexity and interest to the aroma. The taste is a malt led with a blend of tangy hops below the surface giving a wonderful full feel, a yeasty taste also aids the overall flavourings to produce a truly pleasant dark beer.

Bottle from Tomlinsons, Inverness [120213]
Caramel brown, clear, frothy whote head, some lacing
Aroma of wet hay, light spicy hop
Taste of some hay, spicy bit earthy hops, hedgerow fruits, background of light brown caramel malts,
Palate soft to moderate carb with a thin body. Light mouthfeel. Finish - some bitter grain malts, hint of fruits with a dab of earthy roast and some more bitterness in the linger
Overall - Nowhere near as malty as I expected for an 80/-, fair amount of that wet hay and earthy spicy hop in there. It’s just OK.
