Old rating from 2014 - 500ml bottle picked up at the local shop in Montgomery on my Wales road trip. Poured back in Jersey, it's black with a small beige head. Aromas & tastes of dark fruits, coffee, chocolate, liquorice & roasted malt. Moderate body. Smooth finish

2nd July 2015: second beer of a random tasting session with me and no one else. 500ml bottle conditioned: BBD end of July 2015, but I think the brewery were being a little over ambitious with the length of time it would stay ’good’. Poured vigorously into an Abbot Ale glass tankard the beer steadfastly refused to produce a head of any sort, not even a wisp or collar: not a good start. The body is Jet Black by the way. Most likely over chilled by me but as it warmed the beer still had very little aroma or taste apart from a malty base and an ’old musty-out of date’ sort of feel. Lacklustre and boring: a pity because I have liked most of Monty’s brews that I’ve encountered, bottled or cask.

Bottle. It pours a hazy dark, dark brown body and a finger-thick light beige head. The aroma has a good dash of burnt down bonfire, with prunes, licorice and some coffee. Bonfire in the flavor too, with prunes, dark chocolate and some coffee in the back. Medium body, quite dry, but with some sweetness. Lasting rosted and charcoal-ish finish. Quite decent, but not my preferred kind of stout, too charcoal-ish. 140808

Bottle 500ml @ Geokkjer
Pours dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel and hint of coffee. Taste is light sweet and light bitter with a roasted, chocolate and light coffee finish. Body is light, texture is thin, carbonation is soft.

500ml bottle from Appleyards, Shrewsbury. Didn’t realise I hadn’t rated this before so a good excuse to buy another. Vanilla / roasted malt aroma, slick mouthfeel with tobacco, coffee, mild dried fruits and moderate sweetness.

500ml bottle from Kjeller 5, shared with Richard. Deep coal black with ruby highlights. Tan-coloured head quickly reduced to a bubbly ring at the surface. Dark malty nose, ashy. Dark malty taste, hints of coffee and dark chocolate, slightly roasted towards the ending. Easy going stout, rather thin bodied.(Tromsø 18.04.2014).

Flaske 0,5l fra Kjeller 5. Drukket i Skibotn 26 Des 13. Mørkerød dyp amber. Lavt, litt farget skum som flater helt ut. Brukbar aroma av røstet malt. Smaken blir vassen. Gjennomgående preg av røstet malt og litt røyk. Bra i forhold til styrken.
