Visitors to Smuttynose Island, peering across the dark waters of Gosport Harbor towards the ragged rocks of neighboring Star Island, are sometimes startled by the fleeting sight of mysterious, alluring creatures swept up from the Atlantic’s cold, inky depths. Or so they tell us.
Our Star Island Single is an eminently sessionable, abbey-style ale offering a beguiling mix of flavor and refreshment. This medium-bodied golden ale features a slight residual sweetness from Honey Malt and hints of citrus and tropical fruits from the unique Belgian yeast it is fermented with, leaving a crisp dry finish. Enjoy it sociably while you savor good times, tall tales, friendly company & life’s unexpected pleasures.

Not bad, just dull, with a severe need of some sort of defining note. Mild, effervescent, wheat-tinged yet dry, Star Island Single doesn’t offend, but I can’t find anything to hang my hat on. I can see this bottle being a perfectly acceptable summer beer on a hot afternoon where it’s readily available, and being totally forgotten that same day.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a clear pale yellow with about a half finger of white head. Aroma of yeast, honey and some light tropical fruits. Taste is lightly sweet. Yeast, honey, fruits and a little spice. Medium bodied with a thin texture. Fizzy carbonation and a long finish. Overall, it’s ok. After sampling the other 3 in the mix 12-pack I was expecting more from this.

Slightly hazy straw. Lightly spicy with some funky, footy yeast. Slight tartness and the malts and spices both dulled a bit.

355ml bottle from the fridge at Cask Pub & Kitchen. Hazy golden with a film-like layer at the top. Earthy, mid-sweet malts and citrus fruits to the nose. Lemony hops in flavour added by a mild spicy touch. Fruit bitter ending. Very refreshing summer brew with session qualities (London, 31.07.2011).

9/6/2009Pours a bright dark golden color with a thinnish white head that dissipates quickly. Smells of honey, tropical fruits, and a spicy Belgian-esque yeast character. Taste is a touch of sweet malt. Honey, pears, maybe some apple notes finishing with a spicy dryness. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Great sessionable beer!
