Visitors to Smuttynose Island, peering across the dark waters of Gosport Harbor towards the ragged rocks of neighboring Star Island, are sometimes startled by the fleeting sight of mysterious, alluring creatures swept up from the Atlantic’s cold, inky depths. Or so they tell us.
Our Star Island Single is an eminently sessionable, abbey-style ale offering a beguiling mix of flavor and refreshment. This medium-bodied golden ale features a slight residual sweetness from Honey Malt and hints of citrus and tropical fruits from the unique Belgian yeast it is fermented with, leaving a crisp dry finish. (Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Golden colour with frothy, white head. Fruity, spicy nose with apricots, mandarin and spices (coriander seed?). Fruity, spicy taste with notes of apricots, citrus and a moderate, spicy bitterness in the finish. Light body and fairly dry. Leaning in the saison direction without really getting there. Decent and drinkable.

It pours deep gold with copper hues and thin white head. The mild aroma has grapes, apples and hints of spices mingling around. The taste is punctuated by an above average level of carbonation pushing up notes of sweet malts along with a smooth mellow mix of apples, light colored grapes and raisins. By midway and to the finish it becomes a bit grainy and malty and those flavors overshadow the milder fruity notes.

A hazy blonde ale with a thin white head. In aroma, pleasant cloves and bananas wit. In mouth, a nice ale with light bananas, cloves, refreshing, medium bodied, closer to a wit. Bottle at Mondiale 2009.

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Hazy golden, brief head. Orangey nose. Sweet and light bodied with clean hard mouthfeel. Very primitive malt character - the sharpness makes it tough to drink. Highly metallic with notes of orange and tin.

I am currently sitting in my backyard, enjoying a glass of this beer, courtesy of a growler fill from Big Z beverage - I can think of no better way to enjoy this cloudy orange ale - beers like this get no love on this site, and it’s a damned shame - earthy, musty, bready aroma, with notes of tangy wheat, semi-sweet citrus fruits, and peppery character - soft carbonation, medium body - tangy up front, with orange peel, lemon rind, wheat and other grains - very earthy and rustic - some flinty/chalky dryness through the middle, followed by some warming spiciness and peppery character - lingering yeastiness - refreshing yet complex - not sure what the bottled version is like, but I am really digging this draft sample.

Overall Impression: Kind of like a spiced up version of a standard Belgian Blonde. A nice adjustment to a style I don't usually like all that much, but this one works decently well.

Pours a bubbly orange color with a little white head. Lots of detectable sweetness in the nose. Taste is rather spicy and has some light Belgian style hops. Maltiness and fruitiness are the more prominent flavors. Definitely not that great, but drinkable and good enough so to say.

on tap @Blind Tiger-pours a foamy head that reduces to a white ring and cloudy yellow/orange color. Aroma is mild sweet light fruit, light malt. Taste is mild sweet light fruit, light malt, some floral. Easy drinking. Mild effervescence.
