Combining different malts gives Black Dub a rich and complex taste; roasted coffee with hints of chocolate meet sweet oaty notes. There is a dark, deep pool (or dub) in the River Cover to the rear of Middleham Castle, after which our stout is named.

Cask at Brunswick, Derby. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with minimal cream head. There’s roasted malts and a hint of liquorice in the aroma. In the mouth it is fruity and slightly sweet though a tad watery. Flavour is cola and chocolate, some dark malts and a hint of dried fruit. Sweetness lasts into the finish. This is decent enough – but I might have enjoyed it more if it hadn’t been served in such a silly glass !

Handpul cask at the Victoria Inn, Durham. Mid- to dark brown and translucent with a small beige head. Liquorice in the aroma, some chocolate notes. Sweet taste, maybe too sweet at first but a bit more balanced toward the finish. Light almost watery body with soft carbonation.

Cask. Arch and Abbey, Whitby. Clear dark brown. Tight beige foam. Decent chocolate and bitter coffee notes here. Sweet to start with some roast malt bitterness. Creamy mouthfeel. Nice basic stout. Best of the 3 I had in here.

Bottle from a now unrecalled source. Poured dark brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, lightly roasted, light coffee. Medium sweetness, fairly heavy roasted bitterness. Medium body, texture watery, flat carbonation. Not bad though not enough body.
