Hop Strike! is a dry-hopped Black Rye-IPA built from the ground up at Tommyknocker Brewery. This beer is characterized by an intermingling of spicy citrus hops and chocolate malt creating an interesting complexity and great first impression on the nose. Hop Strike’s substantial 95 IBUs are balanced by the chocolate rye resulting in a nice depth of malt character and deep color.

Dark Coca-Cola brown color, small steady beige head. Strong pine needles, resin and wood in the nose. Medium-bodied. Very resiny and pine woody flavor. Quite "green" black IPA by flavor. Not very balanced.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a super dense, seven centimetre tall light brown frothy head that lasts indefinitely. Aroma of caramel, roasted malt, coffee, licorice, rye and quite a bit of grapefruity hops. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep rye and strong malt flavour with a lot of pungent and grassy hops capped off with a strong, yet flavourful sweet caramel finish. Aftertaste shows a good balance of hops and malt, some alcohol notes, a little licorice and a good, somewhat strong black ipa. Overall, a nice beer for the style with the twist of using rye as the malt which makes for a much richer black ipa, but the balance (extra hops) is still spot on. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Manassas, Virginia on 19-January-2012 for US$2.99 sampled at home in Washingtonon 15-February-2012.

Pours a dark brown more akin to a port or nut brown ale. Smallish head. Aroma of hops and roasted grain. Flavor is a nice combination of hop bite and roasted malts and grains. Fairly smooth finish--not overly bitter.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best by Jan 23, 2012. Pours crystal clear dark brown color with a nice 2 finger dense khaki head with great retention that reduces to a thick cap that lasts. Some nice soapy lacing on the glass as well. Aromas of caramel, grapefruit, pine resin, orange, chocolate, roasted malt, rye, bread, and some spicy hops. Nice and fairly well balanced aromas. Taste of huge caramel, biscuit, chocolate, rye, roasted malt, grapefruit, orange, pine, and spicy hops. Nice amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of rye, biscuit, chocolate, roasted malt, and spicy hops on the finish for a bit. Medium carbonation and body; with a very nice creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Good balance of roasted malt presence and hop bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Very smooth drinking. Overall a damn nice black IPA. Great roasted malt flavor presence with a nice amount of hoppiness as well.
