17th July 2014 San Clemente Pizza Port, on my first flight of the day. Very dark brown, almost black in colour, dark beige head. The aroma was over roasted malts, dark bitter chocolate and mildly smoky. The taste very similar to the nose with some added liquorice for good measure. Seemed stronger than the advertised 5.6% ABV, very drinkable.

Bonfire, roasted malts, licorice and some chocolate in the flavor. Lasting roasted finish. Nice, not world class. 130813

On tap, sampled blind. Pours with a near pitch black body with a huge tan head. Big nose of espresso beans, leather, roast and bready notes. Decently spicy roast profile. Flavors are roasty, earthy, spicy, with a bit of acidic dark roast. Slightly bitter edge. Somewhat dry, medium roast astringencies. Finishes dry and a bit chalky.

Sample at the brewpub. Dark brown (almost black) color with a medium foamy beige head that recedes to an outer ring steadily. Roasty malt aroma with coffee notes. Medium body with a malty and nutty flavor with some coffee in the background. The finish is roasted malt up front with a slight hops aftertaste. Above average overall.
