Once upon a time, on Friday, November 15th, 1901, an Edwardian brewer stepped into a London brewhouse and brewed a beer that confounds expectations many years later. An ale darker than most Porters that uses more hops than a modern IPA. Thanks once again to the talents of brewing historian, Ron Pattinson, we can reproduce this moment in time from the original brewday document. This ‘KK’ beer is brewed with several pale malts, brown malt, caramelized brewing sugars and two classic English hop varieties, Bramling Cross and Kent Goldings.
O.G. 1.075, 7.8% ABV.

Bottle thanks to Reynolds314! Pours murky chestnut with a medium brown creamy head that dissipates with nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is malty, nutty, toffee, bready, a bit woody perhaps. Complex. Flavor is light sweet, medium bitter, malty, nutty, earthy body. Really strongly bitter finish takes away from an otherwise nice beer. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle, 66cl, from trade with Papsoe. It pours a very dark brown body topped by a dense, two-finger tan head. Old leather, licorice, mothballs, loft and a burnt touch in the aroma. It’s semi-sweet on the palate, with some alcohol notes, burnt malts and leather. Not as much licorice as in the aroma, but some is there. It’s soft and full-bodied on the palate, faintly warming and it dries up towards the end. I have problems with this one. I mean, it’s lovely as hell, complex and tasteful, really enjoyable, but it’s sort of like nothing else I’ve had. Would be wonderful to get hold of the receipe and try it for myself. 130405

Draft. Dark ruby bordering on brown with a thick cap of soapy head that laced all the way down. nose is old shoe leather and English malt. Flavor is dry roast, old brunt coffee and again the old leather note. Medium body with normal carbonation. I’m still learning about this style so it’s hard for me to understand what the brewer intended here. Interesting and odd.

65 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 29.04.2011
Aroma has exotic, ripe fruits, some berries and vanilla. Like smelling a raspberry quark. Flavour is a bit messy with hops, raspberries, bilberries and vanilla. Very complex, unique and good!
