Balance. That’s what separates India Pale Ales. And that’s the difference between the Southampton IPA and most others.
Southampton IPA is balanced between the hopped-up West Coast-style IPAs and the Old World characteristics of a traditional European IPA. You could say that Southampton IPA is located somewhere between Europe and California, figuratively and literally.
Phil uses three grains and a blend of three American and two English hop varieties to make this complex and delicious IPA. It’s full of floral hop aroma and has fruity apricot and grapefruit overtones. It has an assertive hop flavor and a refreshing hop bitterness while still showing plenty of caramel malt character to balance the flavor.

Bottle from Half Time. Pours bright copper with a decent white head. Medium body with foamy carbonation. Flavor is mildly stone fruit with a touch of citrus. Though the flavor seems to be more floral than fruit. Fairly bitter, considering it’s only 40 IBUs. Very drinkable and satisfying IPA. Finishes pretty dry and rather mouthsmacking.

Bottle: Poured a orange amber color with an off white head. Aroma is light hops and malt. Taste was malty with a strange hop bite, didn’t seem to work well at least for my taste buds.

the trouble with the "mix" of english and american ipa’s is that they are so different for most drinkers. the maltiness of an english ipa is good for session drinking and the hoppiness of american ipa’s makes it great to taste and enjoy, but together creates a very muddled confused beer that doesnt really work, kind of like the beligian white/ipa with the clash of the yeast and hops, just not the peanut butter/chocolate combo that it sounds like.

bottle - Pours clear copper with a one finger head. It has a hoppy aroma with citrus and pine notes. The balance is pretty good. Hops are ample with citrus and plenty of malt to support it. Medium bodied and solid.

Bottle. Active carbonation and lace turns quickly to almost flat. Very fruity, malt-centered aroma; low hoppinig. Fruity flavor with somewhat disordered malt and some bitterness. Not well balanced, lacks spunk, with a rather unpleasant finish. Doesn’t do it for me.

Location: I know I've had this beer before, but this rating is from a 12 oz bottle from Gilly's, 6/9/09

Aroma: Earthy hops, some citrus and pine notes
Appearance: Clear orange color, thick and creamy white head
Flavor: A nice hops flavor, not too overly strong or bitter, but enough hop character to be drinkable
Palate: Light bodied, a smooth beer with a nice lingering mouthfeel
Overall Impression: I enjoyed this one. Its a light and refreshing IPA, with a nice bitter hops quality. Smooth and light, but without sacrificing taste and character.

12 ounce bottle courtesy of Alraomon. Pours a copper color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Very bready aroma with buttery notes and faint hops. Assertive hop taste with big citrus and pine notes, as well as a grainy bready malt finish. Medium bodied.

Pours brilliant clear copper with gold edges and thin off white head. The mild aroma has notes of cherry hard candy, some sweet malts and faint spicy hops. The taste is full and refreshing with rich malts, some roastiness followed by growing yet mild hop bitterness. The spice, slightly citrus and just a bit resiny hop bitterness peaks about midway and fades into the finish outshining the malts. Not terribly hoppy for the style but pretty tasty.
